Moravia is located in the south of Iowa, around 10 km northeast of Rathbun Lake , a reservoir of the Chariton River which flows into the Missouri River . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south is around 40 km from Moravia. The city is about 140 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois .

The first white settlers came from Salem, North Carolina in 1849 and were members of the Moravian Church . Two years later the settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality.
