Mortheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mortheim is a tabletop game from 1999 by Games Workshop . Since Games Workshop stopped the further development of Mortheim in 2002, it has been maintained by the subsidiary Specialist Games Range, formerly Fanatic Games. In the English original the game is called 'Mordheim'.

Gameplay

Comparable to Warhammer Fantasy , Mortheim is played by two or more players, with each player controlling a gang of fighters, which mostly consists of 8–15 models in the common Games Workshop figure size (28 mm scale). Depending on their race, background, experience, and armament, fighters have different skills. Characteristic for Mortheim is the role-play character, which is comparatively strong for a table top game, through which each model becomes an individual personality. The individual fighters become more experienced after each battle, learn new skills or improve their basic values. Even injuries from previous skirmishes are retained and have an impact in subsequent scenarios.

The scenarios take place in the city of Mortheim, which was destroyed by a comet many years ago. Today fragments of this comet (the so-called Morrssteine) are coveted artifacts of magical energy and the most diverse parties are looking for them. In the game Mortheim, players take control of a band of adventurers who meet in search of these fragments and fight for the best collecting areas. After the disputes (mostly not very peacefully) have been resolved, the gangs search the ruins of the city for fragments of Morrstein and other treasures. When the results of this search, the consequences of the injuries sustained in combat and the experience resulting from the experience gained have been evaluated, both players have the opportunity to buy new equipment with the gold pieces and to hire new gang members.

The game phases

A turn consists of three phases: Movement, Ranged & Magic, and Melee. The moves go in turn until the objective of the scenario is met or all but one of the gangs have fled.

The following bands are described in the rules:

  • Reikländer
  • Middenheimer

  • Obsessed
  • Witch hunters

Further bands can be found in the Annual 2002:

Extensions

There are now numerous extensions for Mortheim, for example Lustria deals with the rules for jungle fights (mainly weather rules), Khemri with the rules for deserts (e.g. water consumption in the desert) and Empire in Flames with the rules for campaigns in Imperium. Each of these expansions introduced new gangs, so that it is now possible to play lizards, pirates, grave robbers, orcs, amazons, high elves and various other gangs.
