Slide- out illuminated QWERTY keyboard

The Milestone is the international GSM / UMTS version of the CDMA smartphone from Motorola, marketed as Droid in the United States . It was the first smartphone to use version 2.0 of Google's Linux operating system Android .

Launch

The Milestone was sold 250,000 times in America in its first week of sales. It was marketed by Motorola as a direct competitor to the iPhone 3GS . The Time Magazine chose the Milestone 2009 for the gadget of the year.

Technical characteristics

Milestone / Droid

The quad-band mobile phone has a QWERTY keyboard that can be pushed out from under the display and therefore falls into the class of slider phones . Otherwise, its appearance is that of a smartphone with a 9.4 cm touchscreen with 854 × 480 pixels, which is why the complete form factor is called " slate / slider". In contrast to its American counterpart, the Droid, the Milestone has multi-touch with two points. The computing core is a Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor and a PowerVR SGX for the graphics .

Additional features include a 5-megapixel digital camera on the back, which is supplemented by a double LED as a photo flash and for focusing. The LED can also be switched individually as a flashlight. It also has in common with the successor Milestone 2 that the camera can be called up and operated via a two-stage (focus / release) physical shutter release. This feature, which is unusual for smartphones, is no longer granted to later models.

A CTIA 3.5 mm jack plug for headphone connection and microphone (headset), microSDHC support, a Mini-SIM slot, micro-B USB socket for charging and data exchange, WLAN according to the IEEE 802.11b / g standard in the 2nd , 4 GHz band and Bluetooth 2.1 with increased data rate (headset, keyboard etc. but no mouse) complete the connectivity . Both HSDPA with up to 10.2 Mbit / s downstream and HSUPA with up to 5.7 Mbit / s upstream are available for mobile data transmission .

The delivery of the Milestone with errors already known from the American Droid leads to discussions in the European user community. For example, the camera's autofocus had a bug after which it did not work correctly every 24.5 days, and many users reported sudden reboots at irregular intervals. Most of these problems were resolved after the update to Android 2.0.1 in early February 2010. The update to Android 2.1 has been available for free DACH devices since March 31, 2010 . In addition, the Milestone uses a signed bootloader that makes it difficult to install modified kernels , and thus an important part of custom ROMs.

An update to Android 2.2 was officially announced by Motorola for the 4th quarter of 2010 on August 21, 2010, but this was corrected again to the 1st quarter of 2011 in January 2011 and can only be installed using Windows software. Rumors of bugs and security vulnerabilities were circulating in the community. Unofficial updates to version 2.3.7, 4.0.4 and 4.1, were members of the developer - Community , XDA-Developers, provided that the popular custom ROM, CyanogenMod have successfully ported version 7, 9 and 10 to the Milestone.

Slide- out illuminated QWERTY keyboard

On September 1, 2010, Motorola presented the successor Milestone 2 (A953) for the European market. The device was presented in the USA a month earlier as the Droid 2 (A955) and, apart from the radio technology, has the same technology as the US model. The OMAP-3630 chipset is clocked at 1 gigahertz, the main memory has a capacity of 512 megabytes. The internal memory has been increased to 8 GB and the operating system is now Android 2.2 with the "Motoblur" surface specially developed by Motorola. In addition, the directional pad on the keyboard has been removed, which enables a QWERTY keyboard with larger keys. According to Motorola, the display quality of the camera, which still has 5 MPix, has also been improved. It can now be used to record videos in HD quality.

Milestone 2 is stuck in dock for charging and displays special dock screen.

Like its predecessor, the Milestone 2 can be parked in the same dock for charging or data exchange, displaying a special organizer screen. The subsequent models are no longer suitable for docks. The predecessor still loads with max. 0.5 amps. From Milestone 2 onwards, up to 1.5 amperes can be charged, for which the supplied, very low-resistance cable is actually suitable - in contrast to most USB cables.

This model has been available in Germany since November 15, 2010. The update to Android 2.3.4 was available since December 1, 2011. An update to more recent Android versions is also possible via various modded ROMs. Among other things, the well-known CyanogenMod offers 4.0 with CM9, 4.1.x with CM10 and 4.2.2 with Cm10.1, 4.3 with CM10.2 and 4.4.x with CM 11. You can find it here in a German forum or in the English-language developer forum.

For the first time, a front camera is installed in the Milestone 3. The keyboard has got a 5th row of keys. The number of multi-touch points has increased to 4. An HDMI connection has also been added and the LED flash is twice as bright, although only one LED has been installed. Instead, the camera shutter has been omitted. The location now also supports the Russian GLONASS satellites .

In June 2011 the Milestone 3 was officially presented, which will first be offered for the Chinese market, later also in America. The device is equipped with a dual-core processor and the operating system is Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The Droid 3 can be used in European cellular networks without restrictions, but often has a 'network lock' and must first be unlocked by the original provider (Verizon).

The Droid 4 is the direct successor to the Milestone 3. It was only released by the US network provider "Verizon" and was therefore only released under the trademarked name "Droid", which is used on Verizon Milestone devices. It was released in February 2012 and shipped with Android 2.3. At first it only worked in CDMA networks, but with the update to Android 4.0, support for GSM and UMTS networks also came. Later an update to Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean" followed, then support was discontinued. The Droid 4 supports LTE, but not on frequencies used in Europe. It does not block certain SIM cards or cellular networks, only Verizon can only be used in North America. It has an HDMI output and USB OTG . The battery is permanently installed in this device d. H. screwed and glued, but can be changed using a TORX screwdriver because the battery cover, behind which the slots for the SIM card and SD card are located, can be removed.

Milestone XT720

The Motorola Milestone XT720 is an independent product that, despite the name, has little in common with the Milestone. It has the same display as the Milestone, but has no hardware keyboard, an 8 megapixel camera, xenon flash and an HDMI output. The Motorola Milestone XT720 was the only Android smartphone with a Xenon photo flash at the time of its release. Compared to the Milestone 2, it has a somewhat slower processor with a 720 megahertz and a very small internal memory with only 150 megabytes. It is equipped with the Android 2.1 operating system as standard; An update to 2.2 was ruled out by Motorola, but there are instructions on the Internet for an update to Android 2.2, 2.3 and 4.0. However, some of these versions are incorrect and not fully functional. In addition, they are no longer supported by their developers.
