Motorowl is a German metal and rock band from Thuringia that was founded in 2014.

history

The band was founded in 2014. In 2016 the debut album Om Generator was released, which was co-produced by Fabian Hildebrandt ( Deserted Fear ) and mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö . This was followed by appearances with Sólstafir , Die Apokalyptischen Reiter , 77 , Grave Pleasures and as the opening act for High on Fire . A year and a half after the debut album was released, the band began writing the sequel, which was released in 2018 under the name Atlas . The album was recorded in the Off the Road Studios in Leipzig within ten days . As a producer, the band had been active themselves, where they had been supported by the sound engineer Charlie Paschen . The album was recorded completely live.

style

The band biography on centurymedia.com are Black Sabbath , early Pentagram , Kraan , Guru Guru , Russian Circles , Baroness and Opeth as influences. Jens Kirsch from Ox-Fanzine said about Om Generator that you can hear Psychedelic Rock with “heavy guitars”. The guitars have a metallic sound, which creates a “seventies feeling” with the combination of “fluffy melodies” and a Hammond organ . This reminds you of witchcraft , ghost , early long distance calling or pelican . Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard wrote in his review of the debut album that the band oscillated between doom metal , retro rock and psychedelic rock. Instead of overflowing jam sessions, the group relied on briefly pausing soundscapes, with the occasional use of a Hammond organ being characteristic. The song material has a progressive character and shows an organic development. The vocals have “a slight alternative touch in some passages ”. Boris Kaiser also noted an “alternative rock timbre ” in his review of Atlas, which gives the song material more independence. Otherwise, influences from psychedelic rock, post-rock , heavy metal and krautrock , expressed in "free-spirited arrangements ", are incorporated into the songs. He noted similarities to Frumpy , Wallenstein and Murphy Blend . but also Wolves in the Throne Room and Ash Borer , firmly. In the same issue, Mandy Malon placed the group between Psychedelic Rock, Doom Metal and Krautrock. In an interview with her, Max Hemmann stated that he was more likely to associate himself with Krautrock, while the other members would feel more like metal. Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer drew a comparison to Ghost and described the music as a mixture of psychedelic rock, pop music and doom metal. He went on to say that the group was mainly based on the 1970s, although he also found an influence from stoner rock . In an interview with him, Hemmann named Ghost as a major influence. He told Atlas that they tried to put the keyboard instruments more in the foreground. In the same issue, Frank Thiessies reviewed the album. Would the predecessor still have "Doom, understanding of the seventies, but also a discreetly modern, mastodonic component" the basis for a "great songwriting , the vocal expression aplomb by front man / guitarist Max Hemmann and the wonderful Hammond organ presence by Daniel Detlev" formed, this has now given way to post and progressive rock, which cannot be assigned to any particular era. Shaped the songs were mainly due to the lachrymose song Hemmanns and dominant synthesizer sounds. Overall, the group sounds like a more threatening and “hearty” version of Dredg . There are hardly any commonalities to Iron Maiden that have been advertised , and parallels to Black Sabbath sometimes shimmered through.
