The Mount Stirling is a mountain in the east of the Australian state of Victoria . It is part of the Great Dividing Range and is located approximately 130 km northeast of downtown Melbourne near the Mount Buller ski area .

Mount Stirling is a popular ski area for cross-country skiers and snowboarders and offers particularly good sports opportunities for beginners.

The Mount Stirling Alpine Resort is an unincorporated area surrounded by the Local Government Area Mansfield Shire .

The Delatite River has its source at Mount Stirling and flows west. The Stirling Circuit Road leads around the mountain and also serves as an access route for mountains further into the Victorian Alps. In winter this road at Telephone Box Junction is closed. From this point you can reach the mountain top on touring skis if the snow conditions are sufficient.

Mount Stirling offers views of nearby Mount Buller and the corona of the higher mountains in the east from Mount Cobbler (1,628 m) via Mount Speculation and the Croos cut saw to Mount Howitt (1,742 m). There the mountain range turns to the west and ends with The Bluff , an inclined plateau that drops suddenly on its north side.

On the lower slopes of the mountain, Alpine Ash forests ( Eucalyptus delegatensis ) dominate, which merge into snow-eucalyptus woodland from an altitude of 1,400 m . A small part of the summit region lies above the tree line.

Huts

In the Mount Stirling area there are a number of mountain huts that serve as emergency shelters for visitors to the area.

  • The Bluff Spur Hut is a refuge near the summit that was built in honor of some of the skiers who died of hypothermia on the mountain.
  • The Kingsaddle Shelter is an open shelter amid huge alpine ash trees.
  • The Howqua Gap Hut originally served as accommodation for the loggers and has been implemented around the mountain again and again. Eventually she was left standing at the start of the Howqua Gap Trail.
  • The Geelong Grammar School Hut on the opposite side of the mountain from the Bluff Spur belongs to the Geelong Grammer School and serves as a shelter for ski tours for students of the Timbertop Campus.
  • The Craig's Hut in the Clear Hills, which was built as a set for the 1982 film Snowy River ( The Man from Snowy River , director: George Trumbull Miller ), was destroyed by a forest fire on December 11, 2006, but has since been rebuilt.
  • The Mount No 3 Refuge Hut was rebuilt in 2007.
  • The Bus Hut is on Mount Number 3 Road.

winter

In winter the area is a monitored winter sports area for cross-country skiers and ski tourers.

Maps of the trails and ascents are available at the entrance gate.

summer

In summer the area is popular with off-road drivers and hikers. The hiking trail from the ring road leads to the summit in 2 hours and is used by day trippers and overnight guests.

When it is not snowing or there is a risk of forest fire, the area is used by different groups of students.
