The municipality of Ckochas is a district in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia and has been independent since August 15, 2006.

Location in the vicinity

The Municipio Ckochas is one of three ( until August 2006: two ) Municipios in the province of José María Linares . It extends roughly between 19 ° 30 'and 20 ° 15' south latitude and 64 ° 40 'and 65 ° 56' west longitude. The municipality borders in the north on the province Cornelio Saavedra , in the east on the municipality Puna and the department Chuquisaca , in the west on the municipality Caiza "D" and the province Tomás Frías , and in the south on the province Nor Chichas and the Chuquisaca Department.

The municipality comprises 150 localities ( comunidades ) and consists of two cantons and three districts. The central place of the municipality is the village of Ckochas with 306 inhabitants on the north-western edge of the district, the largest village is Oronckota with 656 inhabitants. ( 2012 census )

The municipality of Ckochas is located in the southern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano .

The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations. The annual average temperature is 13 ° C and fluctuates only slightly between 10 ° C in June / July and a good 15 ° C from November to March (see Vitichi climate diagram). The annual precipitation is only about 400 mm, with a very pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 20 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with about 80 mm monthly precipitation.

The most important idiom of the municipality is Quechua : 35.6 percent of the population only speak Quechua, while 64.6 percent of the population can communicate bilingually in Quechua or Spanish . 88.2 percent of the population are Catholic, 13.5 percent Protestant.

68.3 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 45.8 percent live without sanitary facilities.

The municipality has been independent since August 15, 2006, until that time it comprised the eastern half of the municipality Puna. It was divided, according to the Municipal Government in 2008 in the following cantons ( cantones ) and districts ( distritos ):
