Murat Sözkesen (born April 1, 1975 in Ünye ) is a former Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Bursaspor , he is strongly associated with this club. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. With 57 league goals in the list of players with the most Süper Lig goals for Bursaspor, he is second behind Okan Yılmaz (89 goals). In addition, with 185 first division appearances for Bursaspor, he is 14th in the list of players with the most frequent Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. As the best-known home grown man, he is also considered by his hometown club Ünyespor as one of the most important personalities in club history. For this club Sözkesen was active in addition to his playing activities as club president and head coach.

Player career

society

Sözkesen learned to play football in the youth department of Ünyespor , the most famous club in his hometown Ünye. In the summer of 1994 he was accepted into the professional squad with a professional contract and was also a regular player right away.

After Sözkesen had scored eight goals in 31 league games as a nineteen-year-old in his first professional season, he was committed to the 1995/96 season by the first division side Bursaspor . Since this club was already heavily occupied in its offensive with players like Ercüment Şahin , Magid Musisi , Elvir Baljić and Hakan Keleş , Sözkesen was loaned to the partner club Bursa Merinosspor to gain experience . For the next season, the 1996/97 season , he returned to Bursaspor and this time was kept in the squad by the new head coach Gordon Milne . This season Sözkesen prevailed over the other strikers and was next to Baljić the offensive player with the most appearances. He was fifth in the table with his club and repeated with this the second-best first division placement in the club's history. With Baljić he formed a successful storm duo in the two years they spent together. In the 1997/98 season Sözkesen was the most successful goalscorer of his club with nine league goals behind Baljić. After Baljić was signed by Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the summer of 1998 , Sözkesen rose to become the most important player in his team and became the club's most successful goalscorer with eleven goals this season. This season he also formed a storm duo with Okan Yılmaz for the first time . With this he formed one of the most successful storm duos in the club's history for four years. In the 2001/02 season he played a key role in the 5-0 home win against Turkish top club Galatasaray Istanbul . He scored two goals in this runaway victory and was involved in all other goals. After this game, Galatasaray tried to get Sözkesen.

In the spring of 2002, Sözkesen was finally loaned to Galatasaray with an option to buy for the rest of the season. Here he was taken into account by the head coach Mircea Lucescu in the team planning and used regularly. After it appeared that Sözkesen was establishing himself within the team, he suffered a serious injury in the Champions League match against Liverpool on February 20, 2002 and was out for the rest of the season. With his club he finished the season as Turkish champions .

At the end of the season, Galatasaray decided against the purchase option on the directive of his new head coach Fatih Terim and thus sent the injured Sözkesen back to his previous club. At Bursaspor, Sözkesen failed to recover from the serious injury and build on his previous form. After spending a season below expectations at Bursaspor, he was signed by league rivals Çaykur Rizespor in the summer of 2003 . But played here for two seasons and still lagged behind his usual form.

In summer 2005 he moved to Samsunspor within the Süper Lig . After he stayed here without a competitive game until February 2006, he dissolved his contract by mutual agreement and moved to the third division and his home club Ünyespor. With this club he played the next one and a half seasons and ended his career in the summer of 2007.

After Sözkesen had meanwhile been the club president of Ünyespor and had lost his wife in a traffic accident, he decided in spring 2008 to continue his playing career. So he was committed to the most famous association of his home province Ordu , Orduspor . After he was not used in any game until the end of the season, he ended his career for the second time.

In 2010 Sözkesen decided again to continue his playing career, and played in turn for the amateur clubs Ankara Jandarmagücü and Bartınspor . He ended his career with the latter in 2012.

National team

Sözkesen played four times for the Turkish U-21 national team in 1997 and scored one goal.

Coaching career

Sözkesen took over his home club Ünyespor as head coach in September 2012 and was in charge of it until April 2013.

At the beginning of January 2014, he took over his former club Bartinspor as head coach. After the start of the second half of the season he was dismissed from his coaching post after a matchday.

Functionary career

After he had ended his playing career at Ünyespor in the summer of 2007, he ran for the post of club president of the crisis-ridden club in September 2007 and became club president after winning the election. He resigned from this office after a few months.
