The Murchison Highway is an Australian trunk road that runs from the west coast of Tasmania near Burnie and was opened on December 13, 1963. The section from Waratah to Burnie was called Waratah Highway until 1973 at the latest .

course

The road begins 4 km east of Zeehan as a continuation of the Zeehan Highway and leads first to the north-northeast. At the Pieman River it turns east and runs through the town of Rosebery . 7 km east of town, Anthony Main Road (B28) branches off to Queenstown and the highway turns north. Then he crosses the Murchison River , heads north along Lake Rosebery through the settlement of Tullah and crosses the Mackintosh River . A little later, Pieman Road (C252) branches off to the Reece Dam to the west. The highway continues north and crosses the Bulgobac River and the Que River . There the Belvoir Road (C132) branches off to Sheffield to the east. Soon after, the Murchison Highway crosses the Hatfield River and turns north-northwest. Between Guildford and Waratah , the Mount Road (B23) branches off to Waratah and Savage River in the west and the Ridgley Highway (B18) to Burnie in the north. The highway continues north via Parrawe through the Hellyer Gorge State Reserve , where it crosses the Hellyer River . Past the settlements of Oonah and Henrietta , the route continues northeast to the small town of Yolla , where the Mount Hicks Road (B26) branches off to Wynyard to the north . On the last stretch to Somerset , the Murchison Highway passes the small town of Elliot . In Somerset it is connected to the Bass Highway (A2).

meaning

Prior to the construction of this trunk road, most goods were transported from the west coast to the north coast by the Emu Bay Railway or shipped from Regatta Point or Strahan in Macquarie Harbor .

Parts of the trunk road have been made redundant by roads built by Hydro Tasmania during the dam project on the Upper Pieman River and the Henty River . For example there is a fast cross connection from Queenstown to Tullah just west of the West Coast Range .

Road conditions

Ice and snow can be expected on this road in winter. One of the most dangerous sections is the one on the edge of Mount Black (near Rosebery), where many accidents have happened. The route from Rosebery to Zeehan can also be dangerous in cold and wet weather.
