action

The elderly trivial author Emily Delahunty lives secluded on her idyllic estate in the middle of the nature of Umbria . When she got on a train one morning to go on her usual shopping trip to Milan , a bomb exploded in her compartment . Mrs Delahunty then wakes up in a hospital. Although she is only slightly injured, she learns that several people who were in her compartment died in the explosion and others were also injured. Since all the other survivors have lost loved ones and will soon be able to leave the hospital, Mrs. Delahunty decides to invite them to her house in Umbria to heal the physical and mental injuries there. Meanwhile, the Italian police are investigating.

The guests who are now at the writer's house include an old British general who has lost his daughter, Werner, a young German whose girlfriend died in the attack, and little Aimee, who has lost both parents and now traumatized and dumb. The well-balanced life at Mrs Delahunty is very good for the convalescent. Aimee soon begins to speak again and becomes friends with Werner, who, together with the general, is cultivating a wild garden on their property as thanks for Mrs. Delahunty's hospitality. The idyll is disturbed when it comes out that an uncle Aimees has been found who now wants to bring her to America .

When Aimee's uncle Tom Riversmith arrives in Umbria, it quickly becomes apparent that the somewhat stiff, reserved and humorless ant researcher does not fit into Mrs Delahunty's dolce vita . Your attempts to lure him from the reserve are strictly rejected by him and only provoke secret scorn. Nevertheless, Riversmith stays with Mrs. Delahunty and the other guests for a few days and takes them on a trip to Siena . Meanwhile, Inspector Girotti from the police appears several times at Mrs Delahunty's house and begins to ask questions about Werner. Mrs. Delahunty is also starting to become suspicious after observing an argument between Werner and a few other men, which Werner then denies. After Werner is forced into a car by the men and disappears, Mrs. Delahunty realizes in a dream that Werner was responsible for the attack. She sees how he only used his girlfriend to smuggle a bomb into a plane with important people through her, which then exploded on the train.

Finally, the day comes when Tom Riversmith wants to take his niece to America. Mrs. Delahunty tries to convince him that it would be best for Aimee to stay here, as Riversmith and his wife have no experience with children and their jobs mean that they cannot spend much time with the girl. Riversmith drives Aimee to the airport, but ultimately decides to leave her in Italy with Mrs. Delahunty for the time being and to fly back to the United States alone.
