Mykhaylo Stepanowytsch Wosnjak ( Ukrainian Михайло Степанович Возняк , Russian Михаил Степанович Возняк Mikhail Stepanovich Wosnjak ; * 3. October 1881 in Wilky Masowezki , Crown land Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † 20th November 1954 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian literary critic , Literary historian and politician.

Life

Mychajlo Wosnjak was born in the Galician village of Wilky Masovetski ( Вільки Мазовецькі ), today's village of Volyzja in Shovkva district of the Ukrainian Lviv Oblast, to a poor peasant family. He graduated from Lviv University in 1908 , where he was professor from 1939 and director of the Department of Ukrainian Literature from 1944 .

From 1929 he was a full member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences , from which he was excluded in 1934 and re-accepted as a full member in 1939. From 1951 he headed the department of Ukrainian literature of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Lviv.

From 1940 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR. He died at the age of 73 in Lviv and was buried there in the Lychakiv Cemetery.

Vosnjak was the author of around 600 scientific publications on the life and work of Ukrainian writers (including Ivan Kotlyarevsky , Ivan Netschuj-Levyzkyj , Markijan Schaschkewytsch , Taras Shevchenko , Lesja Ukrajinka and Marko Vovchok ), Ukrainian folklore and Ukrainian theater Relations of the Slavic Peoples. He was also the author of the History of Ukrainian Literature (Volumes 1–3, 1920–1924). Particularly noteworthy is his contribution to the study of biography and the works of Ivan Franko . On his initiative, annual conferences were held in Lviv devoted to the work of Ivan Franko. He also published many previously unpublished works by Franko.
