Mykola Simkaylo

Mykola Simkaylo (also Mykola Simkajlo ; Ukrainian Микола Сімкайло ; born November 21, 1952 in Karaganda , Kazakhstan ; † May 21, 2013 in Kolomyja ) was a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and head of the Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchy in Ukraine .

Life

Mykola Simkaylos' parents, Michail and Anne Simkaylo, lived as Ukrainians in exile in the city of Karaganda at the time of his birth . In 1963 the family returned to their native Ukraine. From 1963 to 1967 the young Mykola attended elementary school . After that he was at a secondary school until 1969 and then began studying engineering at the Technical School Number 1 in Ivano-Frankivsk .

The family was in close contact with the first bishop Pavlo Wasylyk of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi and experienced the underground church in Ukraine . After completing military service , Mykola Simkaylo began studying theology in a secret seminary . On May 15, 1974, Pavlo Wasylyk ordained him a priest . As a young priest he worked as a pastor in the Ukrainian Church and was active as an underground priest in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Lemberg .

Between 1987 and 1990, Mykola Simkaylo became known for publicly advocating the legalization of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine. Together with Volodymyr Wijtyschyn, he was a member of the delegation in Moscow and took part in a hunger strike from May 19 to November 24, 1989 . He was imprisoned for 15 days for participating in the public mass celebration on October 1, 1989 in Ivano-Frankivsk. On January 28, 1990, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian Bishops and was in charge of the official handover of keys for the bishopric . In 1990 he took over the management of Caritas in Ukraine. Between 1991 and 1995 he expanded his theology studies.

In October 2004 the Ukrainian Synod elected him Bishop of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi. On June 2, 2005 he received the papal appointment as bishop of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi and was ordained bishop on July 12, 2005 in Ivano-Frankivsk. The consecration was led by Ljubomyr Cardinal Husar , while Archbishops Jan Martyniak and Wolodymyr Wijtyschyn and Bishop Sofron Stefan Mudry OSBM assisted as co-consecrators . The solemn assumption of office in Kolomyia-Chernivtsi took place on July 13, 2005. Bishop Mykola Simkylo was co-consecrator of Taras Senkiw OM as titular bishop of Siccenna ( auxiliary bishop in Stryj ).

Bishop Mikolay Simkaylo died of heart failure on May 21, 2013 in a hospital in Kolomyia.
