Jan Martyniak
Jan Martyniak , also Ivan Martyniak , Joan Martyniak or Johannes Martyniak , (born June 20, 1939 in Spas near Stary Sambor , Lviv Voivodeship (now Ukraine)) is a Polish clergyman and emeritus Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemyśl-Warsaw for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Poland.
Life
Jan Martyniak, whose parents Vasyl and Maria Martyniak ran a farm in what was then eastern Poland , was baptized in the Greek Catholic Church in Terszów (today Terschiw). The religious life in his birthplace was enhanced by the nearby monastery of the Basilian of St. Josaphat strongly influenced. His father died as a Soviet soldier in a prison camp near Dresden during World War II . In 1946 the Martyniak family was expelled and settled in Lower Silesia . Jan Martyniak attended elementary school in his new place of residence Nowy Waliszów , then he went to the Lyceum in nearby Bystrzyca Kłodzka and graduated from high school in 1958 . He then studied at the Seminary of Breslau theology and was 1964 by Bishop Boleslaw Kominek for priests ordained.
He then worked for a year as a vicar in a Roman Catholic Church and wanted to begin postgraduate studies in Italy in 1964 . Since the Polish authorities refused to issue him a passport, he continued his studies in apologetics at the Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw (today Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw ). From 1969 to 1970 he was an assistant at the seminary in Breslau and held in 1973 at the Theological Academy lectures . On December 22, 1981, the Polish Primate Cardinal Józef Glemp appointed him Vicar General and entrusted him with the care of the Greek Catholic faithful in Poland.
Episcopate
On July 20, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Przemyśl, Sambor and Sanok and appointed him titular bishop of Vardimissa . On 16 September 1989 Martyniak was Cardinal myroslav ivan lubachivsky and co-consecrators Archbishop Miroslav Stefan Marusyn (Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches ) and Bishop Basil Harry mustards (Bishop of Stamford , USA consecrated) bishop. His appointment as Ruthenian Bishop of Przemyś took place on January 16, 1991. After the restructuring of the bishoprics of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Poland, he was appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemyśl-Warsaw on May 24, 1996.
On November 7, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
Consecrations
Archbishop Martyniak dedicated following priests as bishops: Włodzimierz Juszczak , OSBM Bishop of Wroclaw-Gdansk , Petro Kryk titular bishop of Castra Martis (Apostolic Exarch of Germany and Scandinavia ) and Jossyf Miljan MSU titular bishop of Drusiliana (Auxiliary Bishop of Kiev-Halych ).
As co-consecrator he assisted: Julian Gbur SVD as titular bishop of Bareta (auxiliary bishop in Lemberg ), Wassylij Medwit OSBM as titular bishop of Hadriane (auxiliary bishop in Lemberg ), Teodor Majkowicz as bishop of Breslau-Danzig and Mykola Simkaylo as bishop of Kolovomyia .
Awards
- In 2005, Bishop Martyniak was made a knight of the " Order Polonia Restituta " and awarded the Order of the Cross.
- In 2007 he was honored with the Ukrainian " Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise ", which is named after Yaroslav the Wise .
