NGC 2301 is an open cluster of type I3m and is located in the constellation Unicorn south of the ecliptic . It has an angular extension of 15.0 'and an apparent magnitude of 6.0 mag. It is around 2,800 light years from the solar system and is estimated to be 150–200 million years old.
The middle of the cluster contains most of the stars , including the double star h 740

The object was discovered by William Herschel on December 27, 1786 .
