NGC 2280 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble-type Sc in the constellation Great Dog south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 76 million light years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light years in diameter.
Together with NGC 2292 , NGC 2293 , PGC 19201 and PGC 19589 , it forms the NGC 2280 group .
The type IIP supernova SN 2001fz was observed here.
The object was discovered on February 1st, 1837 by John Herschel .
