NGC 2256 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type E / SB0 in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 240 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 125,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 2258 .
The object was discovered on August 1, 1883 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
