NGC 2272 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type I / SB0 in the constellation Canis Major in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 86 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 2280 .
The type Ic / P supernova SN 2012hn was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on January 20, 1835 .
