NGC 2258 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 187 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 2256 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1997E was observed here.
The object was discovered on August 1, 1883 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
