The nail berries ( Ochna ) are a genus of plants in the family of the nail berries (Ochnaceae). The approximately 85 Ochna TYPES have their areas in the subtropics and tropics in much of the world. However, they do not occur in the Neotropic . Most of the species are found in Africa. The best-known species of this genus is likely to be the saw-leaved nailberry ( Ochna serrulata ).

description

Ochna species grow as shrubs or trees . The alternate leaves have a simple leaf blade with mostly serrate, rarely smooth leaf edge. The small stipules are fused intrapetiolar and decrepit.

The branched inflorescences are sometimes umbrella-clustered . The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The rarely four, usually five sepals completely enclose the flower bud, have a smooth edge and are also present in color on the ripe fruits. The five to twelve free petals are usually yellow, rarely orange or white. Many stamens are present in two or more circles . The durable stamens are short to long. 3 to 15 carpels are deep-lobed to an upper constant, 3- to 15-kammerigen ovary grown. There is only one ovule per carpel . The long, slender style ends in a slightly lobed scar.

In a fruit cup there are usually 3 to 10, rarely up to 15 stone fruits together, which turn black when ripe. The seeds contain a straight or curved embryo, but no endosperm .
