description

Branch with inflorescences, flower buds and flower in detail

Vegetative characteristics

Ochna integerrima grows as a deciduous, small tree or shrub and reaches heights of 2 to 7 meters. The short trunk is often strongly curved and reaches a diameter of 6 to 16 centimeters at chest height . The bark of the pencil-shaped twigs is bare and gray-brownish.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is only 2 to 5 millimeters long. The simple, bald leaf blade is 7 to 19 centimeters long and 3 to 5.5 centimeters wide, elliptical, obovate to obovate-lanceolate with a broad, wedge-shaped base, a pointed or blunt upper end and a toothed edge. The leaves of Ochna serrulata are similar, but narrower and more sharply serrated. They have a single main nerve. The adrenal nerves are arranged obliquely in 7 to 15 pairs. The tiny stipules with a length of 2 to 7 millimeters fall off early.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to April. The lateral inflorescences (inflorescences) contain few flowers. The flower stalks are at least 0.5 inches long.

The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope. The five to nine free sepals are oval with a length of 1.3 to 2 centimeters. In Vietnam Mai Vang (translated "yellow Mai", five-digit), and Mai Nui (translated "Mountain Mai", five to nine digits) are differentiated. The yellow petals are 1 to 1.4 centimeters long, oval, while the fruit ripe they remain and are bent back. The stamens are in three circles and are 0.9 to 1.2 inches long. The ten to zwölfkammerigen ovary are pencil-shaped. The scar is slightly lobed.

After the anthesis, the flower bases swell and the petals, stamens and flower bases turn bright red; the fruits adhere to the flower bases; hence the common English name . The black when ripe drupes have a length of 10 to 12 mm and a diameter of 6 to 7 millimeters. The fruit ripens from May to June.
