history
Narayanpur District was created in 2007 when it was created from parts of Bastar District . The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established. The district is part of the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".
population
The population was 139,820 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.16%. Koriya has a gender ratio of 994 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 48.62% in 2011 (men: 57.31%, women: 39.88%). This makes literacy one of the lowest in all of India. Almost 92.4% of the population are Hindus , approx. 0.6% are Muslims , approx. 0.3% are Jainas , approx. 0.4% are Christians , approx. 0.1% each are Buddhists or Sikhs and approx. 6.2% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 16.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .
Almost 15.8% of the population live in cities.
