Bat for Lashes is the pseudonym of the British songwriter , music producer , sound and performance artist Natasha Khan (born October 25, 1979 in London ). When performing live, she is supported by Ginger Lee, Abi Fry and Lizzie Carey.

Life

Natasha Khan was born in 1979 to an Englishwoman and a Pakistani squash trainer. Her parents separated when she was eleven years old. She is the cousin of the squash legend Jahangir Khan .

While studying music and film at the University of Brighton , she experimented with sound installations , animation and performance art . After completing her studies, she began writing her first pieces of music.

Her debut single, The Wizard , was released in 2006 as a download from Drowned in Sound and as a 7 ″ single from Khan's own music label She Bear Records . She then signed a contract with The Echo Label , on which her debut album Fur and Gold appeared on September 11, 2006 . The album was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize as one of the albums of the year. Although Bat for Lashes was considered a favorite, the award went to the Klaxons . At the 2008 Brit Awards , Bat for Lashes was nominated as a British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist . The prizes went to Mika and Kate Nash respectively .

In 2007 Bat for Lashes performed at the Glastonbury Festival, among others . This was followed by a tour of the USA and a few appearances as opening act for Radiohead in the summer of 2008.

The second album, Two Suns , was released on April 6, 2009, entered the British album charts at number 5 and was again nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Bat for Lashes made a guest appearance with other musicians on the Puscifer album Conditions of My Parole, which was released in November 2011 .

Her third studio album, The Haunted Man , was released in October 2012 .

At the beginning of September 2019, Bat for Lashes released their fourth studio album, Lost Girls . In 2020 Bat For Lashes released the EP The Boys Of Summer with two songs from the album Lost Girls and a live version by Daniel and the eponymous cover version of the Don Henley song The Boys Of Summer .

Surname

According to several media reports, Khan chose the pseudonym Bat for Lashes only because the three words sound good together. However, the English idiom “to bat one's (eye) lashes” in German means “to flap one's eyelashes”.
