Naza is the largest privately owned Malaysian group of companies that deal and import automobiles. In addition, automotive components are manufactured and vehicles are assembled for the Malaysian market for other companies, including Mercedes-Benz, KIA, Peugeot and Porsche. A total of around 4,000 people were employed in 2007. The group is family-owned and the management of the company is in the hands of the three sons of the company founder. According to the newspaper The Straits Times, banks estimated the value of the group’s automotive activities to be around EUR 400 million in May 2008 .

Company history

The Naza group of companies was founded by Tan Sri Dato 'Seri Utama SM Nasimuddin SM Amin (1955-2008) and began operations in 1976 as an import and trading company for new and used vehicles from various automobile brands. Initially, used vehicles were sold from Japan to the local market with import licenses that must be obtained from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for any vehicle not manufactured or assembled in Malaysia. Imports, including high-priced vehicles from Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini, were estimated to be around 15,000 vehicles per year in 2008. In 2001 the complete assembly of the Kia Spectra began. The production of the models Ria, Citra, Sorento, Spectra, Optima, Sportage, Suria and 206 Bestari takes place in our own factory in Gurun , Kedah . An annual capacity of 45,000 vehicles was planned for this plant in 2003 for 2008. The plants, which were completed in 2004 at a cost of around 500 million ringgits, have an annual capacity of 55,000 vehicles in 2009. Around 1200 employees were employed there in 2009, who assemble 14 different vehicle models, mainly from Kia Motors and Peugeot for the Malaysian market and some for the surrounding Southeast Asian countries. A factory with an annual capacity of 20,000 vehicles exists in Pekan , Pahang , and another in Bertam , Kepala Batas has been under construction since April 2006. The Hindu reported in January 2007 on plans announced by the Malaysian Minister Dato Seri Samy Vellu for a plant with 500 employees in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in India. In the plant, the cost of which was put at 259 million USD, the Sutera small car is to be produced for the Indian and other markets from 2010, with an annual capacity of around 30,000 vehicles.

Motorcycles are assembled at the Shah Alam plant . With the help of partners from China, Taiwan and South Korea, around 50,000 motorcycles per year can be built there on a production area of around 24,000 m² in two-shift operation, which are then exported completely or as a kit to Brunei or Iran via partner companies. For 2009 plans envisage the production of around 20,000 motorcycles, around a quarter of which will be exported. The Naza Flash model, which sells for around 850 euros, accounts for about half of the total production . We are aiming for our own engine production in 2014, with the aim of increasing the local share of the production value to 60%.

In April 2007, the company applied alongside other providers such as Volkswagen to take over the state-owned, then deficit Malaysian car manufacturer Proton , which ultimately did not materialize. According to information available at the Bangkok Motor Show 2008, the Forza produced by the company will be exported to Thailand. At that time, the vehicle was considered to be the cheapest automobile sold in Thailand at a price of just over 7,000 euros. It was derived from the Chinese Hafei Lobo, which was developed with the participation of international partners, and has a local added value of 70%, which leads to a favorable customs tariff for trade within the countries affiliated to the AFTA agreement , more than twice that figure was sold at the fair of expected pre-orders placed. Like the Bestari, the Forza is also exported to Singapore. Negotiations are still ongoing, for example for Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Mauritius. Due to the regulations between different Southeast Asian states, which provide for more favorable customs tariffs between these states with a minimum share of 40% locally generated added value, the company has to export around 8,000 of these under its own name or as a licensed product (Kia , Peugeot) for example to Thailand or Indonesia.

Branches

Within Malaysia, the group has 73 sales and 86 service branches for vehicles from the Kia model range as well as 17 sales and 27 service branches for vehicles from the Peugeot model range. In addition, the group of companies, consisting of more than 30 companies, operates restaurants, local public transport and other activities in Germany and abroad. including hotels and a defense technology division.

In 2008, Naza Italia Sdn Bhd., One of the group's companies, received the distribution rights for Ferrari branded cars, while another (Nasim Sdn Bhd) received the distribution rights for Peugeot branded vehicles. In February 2009, a sales partnership with Maserati was announced. The sales room will be one of the largest in Malaysia with a planned presentation area of around 45,000 sq ft . According to the company, when it opens in Petaling Jaya in March 2009, it will be the largest Ferrari and Maserati distribution center outside Italy. The sales program of Next Bike Sdn Bhd, a company of the group, has also included Ducati brand motorcycles since 2000 .

Real estate business

The real estate business is operated by Naza TDDI, which emerged from the takeover of TDDI in 2004. The managing director of the real estate company is SM Faliq SM Nasimuddin, the youngest of the three sons of the group's founder. Naza TDDI is investing in a 50-storey high-rise in the Platinum Park industrial park in Kuala Lumpur , for which Prime Minister Najib Razak laid the foundation stone in July 2009 . Among other things, the group’s administration will be housed in the building. Completion of the Naza Tower , which will provide approximately 532,000 sq ft of office space, is scheduled for 2013. The building is expected to meet the requirements of the Malaysian government's Green Building Index program . A sales room for automobiles is planned for the ground floor.

Food and Beverage

In July 2009, the Food and Beverage division acquired license rights from the American company Well Springs to sell Tutti Frutti frozen yoghurt for Malaysia, India and Thailand. Outlets in Malaysia are to be operated independently, for the other countries distribution is planned from 2010 through joint ventures.

The company supports the soccer club Kuala Muda Naza FC .
