In June 2002 the second generation of the Carens was presented. It was visually much more modern than its predecessor.

Two trim levels were offered: LX and EX. In both versions, air conditioning, electric windows on all doors, TCS (Traction Control System), four airbags and much more were part of the standard equipment. In the "EX" version, a. In addition, automatic air conditioning, rain sensor and automatically dimming interior mirror are installed as standard. Only in this version could a partial leather interior with seat heating be ordered at an additional cost. Both the diesel and gasoline versions could be combined with a 4-stage automatic steering wheel with a torque converter lock-up clutch. An exclusively electrically operated sliding glass roof could also be ordered for all equipment variants. However, otherwise valuable materials are missing in the interior; a “plastic atmosphere” dominates. Some control elements, which can even distract you from traffic, are arranged unfavorably. So you have to look away from the street to operate the two pushbuttons for the rear wiper / washer on the lower left dashboard. Otherwise, the price-performance ratio and the practical benefits of the KIA Carens II can still be classified as “good to very good”. Used cars are among the cheaper purchases compared to competing vehicles such as the Opel Zafira or the VW Touran.

Technology / driving characteristics

In 2002, the Kia Carens II corresponded to the usual technical standard with independent suspension, disc brakes also internally ventilated at the front and rear, plus brake force distributor, power steering and ABS. In particular, with the somewhat rough 2.0 l diesel engine, he conveyed the idea of sitting in a car that is “well motorized” for all road conditions. There was enough space for four adults and their luggage in the Carens II. The storage compartment under the luggage compartment was very practical. This created a flat loading area - after folding it down in connection with the rear bench, which is a little higher than the front seats.

In Malaysia it was sold as Naza Citra . Production of the Carens II ran out in August 2006.

The third generation of the Kia Carens was presented on May 25, 2006 at the Salon International del Automovil de Madrid . The vehicle sold from September 2006 on the floor pan of the Kia Optima is otherwise newly developed. In the Kia product range, the Carens was placed between the compact model cee'd and the larger Van Kia Carnival when it was launched . The Carens was available as a five- and seven-seater.

A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 106 kW (144 PS) or a 2.0-liter common rail diesel with 103 kW (140 PS) were available as drive. The gasoline engine is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission, the diesel to a newly developed 6-speed manual transmission. Alternatively, a four-speed automatic transmission is available for both engines. The wheels were hung individually; at the front on MacPherson struts and wishbones, at the rear with a multi-link axle .

The scope of equipment of the Carens in Germany is divided into the four variants LX Basis, LX, EX and EX Top.

In autumn 2010 the compact van was revised, which can be seen from the outside by a new radiator grille. The engine range was changed. From now on, there was a choice of two gasoline engines, a 1.6-liter engine with 97 kW (132 PS) and one with a displacement of 2 liters and 106 kW (144 PS) and a 1.6-liter diesel in two output levels with 85 kW (115 PS) and 94 kW (128 PS) are used.

In the USA the model was called Rondo . In Malaysia, the revised model with indicators integrated in the mirrors has been offered by the Naza company as the Citra II Rondo since 2012 .

The following petrol engines were offered:

  • 2.4 l in-line engine with four cylinders and 129 kW (175 hp)
  • 2.7 lV engine with six cylinders and 141 kW (192 hp)

The fourth generation of the Kia Carens celebrated its world premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show . The compact van was launched in Germany on May 4, 2013. It is about 20 mm shorter, 15 mm narrower and 40 mm flatter than its predecessor, with the wheelbase being extended by 50 mm to 2.75 m.

At the market launch in Europe, the Carens was available with two petrol engines and one diesel in two power levels. The petrol engines have either 1.6 or 2.0 liter displacement and an output of 99 kW (135 PS) or 122 kW (166 PS). The 1.7-liter CRDi turbodiesel has an output of either 85 kW (115 PS) or 100 kW (136 PS). The lower power level of diesel is not available in Germany. Consumption (4.8–7.9 l / 100 km) and CO 2 emissions (132–184 g / km) have been significantly reduced compared to the predecessor.

The model is no longer available in the USA for the time being. In Canada, however, like its predecessor, it is sold under the name Rondo .

In the summer of 2016, the Carens was subtly revised. In addition to a slightly different look and an upgraded interior, a newer infotainment system has been installed since then, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , among other things . The range of safety systems has been expanded to include a blind spot assistant and a cross traffic warning system.

The Carens has not been available in Central Europe since 2018. There is no direct successor model.
