Life

Barrett grew up in Oklahoma City , where his family moved when he was a child. In 1960 he published his first story in Galaxy Science Fiction ( To Tell the Truth , August 1960). In the decades that followed, he wrote short stories that have since appeared in several anthologies. Some have also been translated into German.

From 1970 Barrett also wrote novels, he has published a total of 50 novels and over 70 shorter stories. His best-known novels include Through Darkest America (1987), its sequel Dawn's Uncertain Light (1989) and the four-volume Aldair cycle (1976–1982).

In addition to his independent work, Barrett also wrote novel versions and tie-ins . He wrote the novel versions for the films Judge Dredd (1995), Barb Wire (1996) and Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie (2000), tie-ins for the Babylon 5 SF series ( The Touch of Your Shadow, the Whisper of Your Name , 1996), two volumes for the Spider-Man series Spider-Man Super Thriller and a Batman tie-in. The novel versions of Judge Dredd and Barb Wire were also published in German translation. Under the publishing pseudonym Victor Appleton he wrote two volumes of the Tom Swift series , as Franklin W. Dixon two volumes of the Hardy Boys . He also worked as a comic book scenarist .

In his later years the focus of his work shifted away from science fiction and towards crime fiction . The series of his Wiley Moss stories from this genre was translated into German by Thomas Stegers and was published by Heyne Verlag in the 1990s :
