The Hamburg commissioner Vincent Ruiz repeatedly meets with the psychiatrist Dr. Johannes Jessen together. Ruiz's marriage failed and since his wife left him with their little daughter, he has been left alone and has become a "lonely wolf". Now that his daughter has grown up, he tries to improve his relationship with her. At first he is very hostile to Jessen, but later approaches him at a professional distance and values his expertise.

There is a literary role model for the Hamburg psychiatrist Jessen by the name of Joseph O'Loughlin, which comes from the pen of the Australian crime writer Michael Robotham . While O'Loughlin lives in London, the ZDF has moved the location to Hamburg, but retained all the specifications of the character and the stories.
