Neckar-Käpt'n is the name under which the Neckar-person navigation Berta Epple GmbH + Co KG in Stuttgart , the passenger shipping in the season Easter to October on the Neckar operates.

history

The Neckar has been used as a transport route for centuries. In 1921 work began on expanding the Neckar into a large shipping route with barrages. In 1956 the Neckar was navigable as far as Stuttgart thanks to the canalisation . The expansion of the Stuttgart port took place until 1958. At that time only cargo ships sailed the Neckar. When the expansion of the Neckar Canal from Heilbronn to Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt was nearing completion in the late 1950s , Karl Epple (1893–1961), the founder of the gravel and civil engineering company of the same name, and his wife Berta Epple agreed that now Stuttgart, as a future port city, should also be accessible to passenger shipping.

MS Stuttgart on the Neckar

In 1956 the company "Neckar-Personen-Schiffahrt Berta Epple" was founded and the first two ships were commissioned from the Schmidt & Sons shipyard in Oberkassel (Bonn) . Meanwhile, 15 landing stages have been set up between Stuttgart and Heilbronn - partly with the help of the municipalities . With the christening of the “Stuttgart” by Ms. Yvonne Klett, the wife of the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Arnulf Klett , on March 7, 1957, the two sister ships “Dorothea Epple” and “Stuttgart” began regular shipping operations in Bad Cannstatt.

The inauguration of the port of Stuttgart on March 31, 1958 by Federal President Theodor Heuss also aroused the people of Stuttgart's interest in their own port and in shipping, so that Berta Epple built other, mostly smaller units for tours and put them into service let. So their fleet temporarily comprised seven ships with a total capacity of around 2,500 places.

In 1964 the son Fritz Epple took over the management and after the death of his mother in 1965 the company became the sole owner. For 40 years the Epple company operated the passenger ships under the abbreviation NPS on the route Plochingen - Esslingen am Neckar - Stuttgart - Ludwigsburg - Marbach am Neckar - Besigheim - Lauffen am Neckar - Heilbronn . In 1997 Wolfgang and Susanne Thie took over the management. The couple gave the company the new name "Neckar-Käpt'n". In 2008 the Neckar captain put the 1st Stuttgart party raft into service. It can accommodate up to 200 people and offers up to 100 m² of open space.

At the end of 2019 it was announced that Wolfgang and Susanne Thie had sold the company after they had been in the red in previous years.
