history

The port originally built around 1570, from which grain and rapeseed were shipped to Bremen , Hamburg , the Netherlands and Norway , was silted up by dykes to reclaim land and had to be abandoned around 1700. It was moved closer to the sea, but in 1930 it was no longer navigable. It was not until 1969/70 that a ferry port was built from which Baltrum is approached. The shorter travel time of only half an hour meant that ferry traffic via Norddeich was stopped in 1986.

From 1885 to 1977 Neßmersiel belonged to the north district .

On July 1, 1972 Neßmersiel was incorporated into the municipality of Nesse . On November 1, 2001 this came to the Dornum community.

In July 2006, the 20th anniversary of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park was celebrated on Neßmersiel beach.
