history

The Neuer Markt was first mentioned in a document in 1285. It was the center of a new city that developed somewhat after the old town with its center, the Old Market . Some researchers suspect that this town would have been Schadegard , others see the "Neustadt" as part of Stralsund from the beginning.

On the west side of the Neuer Markt, in front of the houses, there was a town hall of its own , which was similar to the town hall on the Alter Markt - albeit without the façade.

During the siege by Friedrich Wilhelm , the "Great Elector", in 1678 the town hall and all other houses on the Neuer Markt were destroyed. It was rebuilt as a material house ( Malchhaus ) by the Swedes. After the transition of Stralsund from the Kingdom of Sweden to the Kingdom of Prussia, the house was initially used as an armory , but was demolished in the second half of the 19th century.

During the Second World War, an air raid shelter was built under the square .

Line 1 of the Stralsund tram ran across the Neuer Markt.

In 1968 the square was brought into its current state. From then on it served mainly as a parking lot ; the tall street lamps also date from this period. The trees lining the market were felled. On April 22, 1970, the New Market was named in honor of the Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in Lenin Square renamed. After the political change it received its historical name again.

A redesign of the area has been considered since 2012. So far it has served as a parking lot with 165 parking spaces and two disabled parking spaces and as an event space for weekly markets and annual markets . Since 2013, various ideas for a market redesign have been exchanged in several citizens' meetings. The decision to redesign the Neuer Markt was made in spring 2020 as part of a two-phase competitive process.
