action

Gabi and Martin get to know each other via a dating app. Both are in their late twenties, live in Los Angeles and are looking for a one-night stand . But there is a spark between them: They no longer want to part, but rather enter into a stable relationship. Both deactivate their account on the dating app.

Gabi moves in with Martin and gets to know his parents. She learns that Martin has already been divorced and that he also had a sister who has died. Martin doesn't want to talk to Gabi about either of these, which puts a damper on the relationship.

One night they cheat on each other, but do not want to break up because of that, but seek out a couples therapist who advises them to tell each other honestly everything. They talk openly about their previous sexual experiences, which both find exciting. So they decide to meet up with others for one-night stands and tell each other everything about it so that there is always "something new" ( newness ) in the relationship.

Both reactivate their account with the dating app and meet with others in mutual consultation. Sometimes they also observe each other, report about it and thus fuel their own sex life. Martin tells his best friend, the family man Paul, how well everything works, that Gabi never has an orgasm with other men, and that he therefore feels safe in this arrangement.

Meanwhile, Paul has news from Martin's ex-wife Bethany: They have had a child. This news throws Martin off track. When he meets an acquaintance of Gabi's girlfriend Claire in a bar, he bursts out: he tells her that his ex-wife had a miscarriage. The relationship broke up because Martin couldn't ask her to honestly say that he was also relieved not to become a father so young. Martin would like to tell Gabi the same thing, but it doesn't come to that.

Meanwhile, Gabi meets Larry, the older colleague of a friend. She describes her open relationship to him, meets with him and gets to know his daughter. He gives her an expensive necklace. When she tells Martin about Larry, she mentions that she had an orgasm on him, which makes Martin angry.

Gabi learns from Claire that Martin has confided in her friend. She is hurt because he kept secrets and finds an email for Bethany on his computer. There is a heated argument. Martin is furious because she hid from him that she received expensive presents from Larry. He accuses Gabi that she is to blame for everything because of her idea of the open relationship.

They split up in an argument and Gabi flees to Larry. He made her the offer to accompany him and his daughter on a longer trip to Europe. At a party she makes him a scene because he doesn't take it seriously. He replies that because of her immature dealings with relationships, he cannot take her seriously. When she tries to speak up, it turns out that Larry sees her arrangement very differently: The relationship should remain superficial, he just wants to have fun and see the gifts in return. Gabi realizes that she doesn't want this kind of relationship and leaves Larry.

Martin meets with his ex-wife and the two speak out. Martin wishes her all the best and is happy for her.

Gabi comes back to Martin. Both admit to each other that their love is something special and that they want to stay together, but not "like they used to". They promise each other that they will solve future boredom and conflicts together and not through others.
