Next Gen - The girl and her robot (Original title: Next Gen ) is a Chinese - Canadian animation - science fiction film . It was released on September 7, 2018 worldwide, except for China, on the video-on-demand platform Netflix .

The film is about a young girl named Mai who grows up in the futuristic, utopian Grainland, where robots can be found in all life situations and automate almost everything , from driving a car to combing hair. A difficult childhood, in which his parents split up and he was teased at school, made him grow up to be a rebel in puberty who wanted to rebel against her robot-loving mother and the modern world.

She accompanies her mother Molly to a robot fair organized by the IQ Robotik company to inspect the latest model of Q-Bots, the Gen 6 household robot . Since her mother shows no interest in her, she runs around on her own and soon has to flee from security robots. She happened to get into the workshop of the scientist Dr. Tanner Rice where she meets Project 77 aka 7723 . 7723 is a robot that Dr. Rice has developed in secret and which is far superior to the other robots. Mai accidentally activates it, but is removed by a security robot and brought back to her mother. She loses her rucksack in the workshop, which 7723 takes as an impetus to look for her and bring her the rucksack. When he is chasing his mother's car, he is chased by numerous police robots who try to stop him because of his unknown registration. Due to its superior technology, it causes veritable devastation in the city and is ultimately buried under the rubble of a collapsed bridge. In doing so, its memory module is damaged, which leads to a severely limited memory capacity.

Meanwhile, Mai torments herself with the recurring problems in her life: the lack of affection from her mother, bullying and beatings at school, loneliness and the ubiquity of annoying helper robots. The evening of the next day she meets 7723 again, who followed her into the garden of her house. Mai sees in him an opportunity to live out her rebellious phase. She uses it to take revenge on her classmates and destroy the robots that annoy her. The latter in particular is also being watched by the media; Justin Pin, the head of the robot production company IQ Robotik, is approached about it on a talk show. As a result, he hires Dr. Tanner Rice, the developer behind the new Gen 6 robots and 7723, takes to the issue and forces him to find the robot that has run away. It can be clearly seen here that Dr. Rice and Justin Pin have vastly different opinions about corporate governance and the new robots. However, Justin Pin makes it clear that the goal of bringing you into every household must be achieved as soon as possible.

7723 and Mai experience a lot together, with the robot getting more and more remorse for the destruction. This creates tension between the two and, in the end, an argument. As so often in her life, Mai feels alone and abandoned. He also has to erase memories again and again as his memory is increasingly full and he is on the verge of a system breakdown. After the argument with Mai, he therefore decides to delete the part of the software that controls his weapons in order to be able to keep the memories with Mai.

Shortly thereafter, Dr. Rice Mai and her mother go to where he can give 7723 a new memory module. However, they are surprised by Justin Pin and his fighting robot Ares. He reveals to them that it is his plan to wipe out humanity with the help of the Gen 6 robots programmed to explode. A fight ensues in which 7723 is far inferior without a functioning weapon system and Ares and Justin Pin can kidnap Mai's mother. Mai and 7723 have to flee into the sewer system. The fact that he didn't help her mother and that his guns don't work starts a new argument in which Mai ends up angrily alone. She would like to get into the company building of IQ Robotik. However, 7723 follows her and helps her to defend herself against the large number of security robots and to Dr. Rice to arrive. He is just about to pack his things and warns them that it is a trap when Justin Pin appears with Ares. Now it is becoming increasingly clear that Justin Pin is also a robot and that his consciousness and that of Ares are related. Ares kills Dr. Rice and throws 7723 into a nearby sports stadium. While the robots are fighting each other there, Mai frees her mother. However, she is surprised by Justin Pin.

The fight continues, and by now it is becoming clear to the spectators of the sporting event who Justin Pin really is: Ares killed the real Pin and uses his body as a doll to free the earth by obliterating the people he thinks are evil. 7723 realizes that he can only win this battle if he restarts his system and reactivates his weapons. However, this means the deletion of all memories with May. He initiates the process, and while his memory is gradually being cleared, he successfully fights Ares until there is only a wreckage left of him. 7723, on the other hand, has finished its restart and is therefore temporarily unusable. In the wreckage of the Ares robot there is one last part of him that is barely functional. However, Mai manages to destroy it with a piece of scrap lying around.

After the fight, Mai retains 7723, which, however, has to relearn all behavior patterns due to the restart. She also manages to establish contact with her school friends and her mother, who has recognized that her daughter is more important than the robots.

The film was directed by Baozou Studios and Alibaba Pictures under the direction of John Morch and Yangbin Lu for Netflix and Alibaba Pictures produced . The film was completely animated by Tangent Animation with Blender , with a few exceptions .

The German dubbing was done at VSI Synchron GmbH in Berlin under the dialogue direction by Mike Betz , who also wrote the dialogue book for it.
