Reasons for the Nexus series

In 2008, HTC launched the first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream . Later other manufacturers followed with Android devices and mostly gave them their own user interfaces and pre-installed software. Apart from the hardware, one reason for modifications was that it could be differentiated from devices from other manufacturers. Manufacturers often get money for preinstalled software.

However, the additional software, which runs constantly in the background, makes devices more sluggish - and the energy requirement also increases. In addition, many manufacturers hesitate to update to newer Android versions .

Therefore, from January 2010, Google offered its first smartphone, the Nexus One . For Nexus devices,

  • no software preinstalled other than Google's own
  • given the opportunity to receive future Android versions.

Since new Nexus versions get a new Android version, they also serve as a reference device to present the new software. The Nexus 5X and 6P demonstrated with the fingerprint scanner how this is supported in the Android version 6.0 “Marshmallow”, which was presented at the same time. In addition, app developers with Nexus devices can test applications on a device with the latest firmware .

Manufacturing

Google was n't a hardware manufacturer until it took over Motorola Mobility . Therefore, contract manufacturers manufactured Nexus devices. For this purpose, Google works closely with a contract manufacturer months in advance, since the latest device usually introduces a new Android version. In order not to prefer a manufacturer, which might cause others to withdraw from Android, Google alternates with the contract manufacturer. The previous selection was made by established smartphone and tablet manufacturers such as HTC , Asus , LG or Samsung , some of them several times.

distribution

The first Nexus device was initially exclusively sold directly via a Google website. Due to low sales figures, Google stopped sales in June 2010. The market research company Flurry saw the reason for the low sales figures in exclusive sales only via a website without being able to look at or try out the device beforehand. On the other hand, the then Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in an interview with the Telegraph that Google achieved its goal of promoting the Android platform with the Nexus One and is not offering any other Nexus devices.

As of December 2010, the Nexus S Nexus devices were also sold in stores. Between 2012 and 2015, the devices were also sold through Google's own platform, Google Play . The devices have been sold in the Google Store since March 11, 2015 .

On October 4, 2016, Google published the successor series Pixel .
