Nier: Automata ( Japanese ニ ー ア オ ー ト マ タ , spelling : NieR: Automata ) is an action role-playing game developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and for Microsoft Windows on March 7, 2017 (PlayStation 4 version) has been. Nier: Automata is set in the same universe as Nier , an offshoot of the Drakengard series. The plot is embedded in the midst of a proxy war between machines built by alien invaders and the remnants of humanity. The story follows the missions of a battle android and his companion.

Plot overview

Nier: Automata takes place in the same post-apocalyptic setting as the original Nier after the fourth end of the game. While the series tradition of Drakengard has been maintained and a dark atmosphere is maintained and the plot of the story branches out, there is no direct connection between Nier: Automata and the other parts of the series. The story in Nier: Automata takes place in 11945, 8480 years after the events of the first Nier. Characters

The protagonist is YorHa Model B No. 2, or “2B” for short, a female soldier as an android woman of the YorHa (also “YoRHa”), whose main characteristics are calm and serenity. It is accompanied by "9S" (YorHa Model S No. 9), an enlightenment android , which shows more feelings than other units. The two are watched by “A2” (YorHa Model A No. 2), an outdated prototype android of the B-line with a silent personality who often decides to act alone. Other important (secondary) characters are the "Commander", an android under the authority of the bunker; "Adam" and "Eve", twin brothers whose motives are unknown in advance; “Pascal”, a machine that hates conflict and wants peace; "Devola" and "Popola", androids who help the resistance and descend from similar beings already known from Nier ; the original main character of Nier "Emil", who has lost his memories of the years before; the various "Operator" androids who act as foremen for YorHa; and the "Pod" droids, which support units of YorHa in battle and serve as a connection to the bunker. Additional characters from both Nier and Drakengard 3 are also mentioned.

The story of Nier: Automata begins in 11.945. Alien beings attacked the earth with an army of machines and have since destroyed all humanoid life. The surviving part of humanity withdraws to the moon and organizes the resistance from there. The base of the androids called "YorHa" is also located on the moon. They were developed to fight the machines in a proxy war for the people. Androids are strictly forbidden from having real names or having real feelings, which fundamentally distinguishes them from humans.

Nier: Automata starts during the 14th Machine War with the story of a YorHa Android woman with the identifier “2B” and her companion “9S”. Both droids are tasked with locating and destroying a "Goliath" -class machine being. For this purpose, the search starts in a former arms factory of the people, which has been used by the people as their own factory since the machines were taken over. 9S is badly wounded while fighting the Goliath. With the help of the reconnaissance aircraft from 9S, 2B then succeeds in defeating the Goliath. Further appearing Goliaths force 2B and 9S to activate the self-destruction and thus to destroy all enemy units and themselves. 9S previously managed to upload the data from 2B to the computer in the main headquarters on the moon. Both androids are sent back to Earth to provide further assistance. There they meet the two human-like androids Adam and Eve. They also meet Pascal, who is protecting a colony of non-hostile machines. In an attack with machines of the Goliath class, the androids win the battle, the city is largely destroyed and an underground cave is uncovered. In this cave, 2B and 9S discover the leaders of the alien invasion; which are all dead. It turns out that Adam and Eve killed them and their next goal is the extermination of humanity. 2B and 9S manage to defeat the two, but they manage to escape. Then the two talk to Pascal and learn that there is another kingdom of machines that live in the forest. These machines have a certain degree of loyalty and protect the king in their castle. You are kind. 2B and 9S find out that this king is just a baby machine. Then the android A2 appears and kills the baby. The commander on the moon informs the two that A2 is a wanted droid and must be destroyed; without mentioning what crimes he should be exterminated for.

The machines ask Pascal and 2B to negotiate possible peace conditions in the old, abandoned factory. There the two learn that the machines are destroying themselves for a reason that has not yet been clarified. After it becomes clear that no peace negotiations are possible, the two flee. 9S, whose damage has been repaired, supports the two of them from the bunker. He hacks into the machine system and learns information about the origins of the war and the reasons for the creation of the YorHa. After 2B and Pascal escaped from the factory, they meet Eva. The android has infected all machines with a virus. To support them in battle, 9S flies to earth with its aircraft. To win the fight, 9S has to hack into Eva's system. In the process, he himself is injured and he asks 2B to end his life. Shortly beforehand, 9S succeeds in copying his thoughts into a nearby machine.

Fully repaired, the two androids are sent back to earth to provide support for other YorHa androids. These are attacked by the machines using an EMP weapon to pull the androids to the side of the machines. After an attack by the machines and other YorHa androids, 2B and 9S escape, but are tracked down by the machines. They decide to reload their data into the bunker and trigger another self-destruction. With new android bodies, 2B and 9S want to report to the Commander. At the headquarters they learn that no reports have been received about the EMP weapon and the virus. It turns out that the androids are already infected with the virus. The three then flee and get to the hangar. There it turns out that the Commander is already infected with the virus. 2B and 9S are forced to escape with the aircraft while the bunker explodes in the background. Back on Earth, the two are separated, and 2B finds out that the virus has already spread to her body. She then decides to go to a secluded place. There she meets A2 who is fighting with the machines. 2B decides to give A2 her sword, which contains all of 2B's memories. When A2 uses the sword to destroy 2B, 9S sees it from a distance. In an earthquake it loses its balance and falls into the forest area directly in front of a large, white tower, which is a kind of rocket aimed directly at the moon.

At the top of the tower, A2 explains that 2B is actually the "2E" model. Their task was to kill 9S should it learn the truth about the people and the YorHa. A2 offers to help 9S through the memories in 2B's sword. 9S, who is already infected with the virus, challenges A2 to fight. The player can then choose different characters, each with a different ending. In end C, where the player chooses A2, the player destroys 9S, then heals him from the virus and sacrifices himself to destroy the white tower. In end D, where the player selects 9S, both androids, A2 and 9S, kill each other. In the final moments of 9S the function of the tower changes to a kind of spaceship with information about the machines and androids, on the way to another planet. The player can decide whether or not 9S will join them. Both scenes, endings C and D, lead to a credit card in which the player is asked whether the intact data of A2, 2B and 9S should be destroyed or not. If the player chooses to keep the data, end E is triggered, which results in a redesign of the androids.

Game setup

Nier: Automata is a Japanese role-playing game in an open world game environment. The player controls the multiple characters through the action with the ability to rotate the camera in 360 degrees at any time. New playable characters are unlocked with each stage completed. While the game was initially heralded as an action game, the developers made changes to the game in that it kept the RPG-like elements of the original Nier. The focus in the game setup is on short-range weapons, with some firearm elements also built in. Gun stories, a recurring element in Drakengard and Nier tied to the guns found, have also been added.

The action-based combat system enables the player to face enemies in real time in a variety of in-game environments. During combat, the character can use light attacks, which are fast and weak, and heavy attacks, which are stronger but slower. During combat, the player character can dodge enemy attacks and, if a button is timed correctly, make the character temporarily invulnerable and launch a counterattack that does serious damage. The character has an additional companion called a "pod", a flying robot that performs arranged attacks that can be customized. When attacking, the character can switch between weapon types as well as between attacks to perform combination attacks.

The game character can also be assigned up to four different weapons in two different weapon sets. Each weapon set contains two weapons, one for long-range and one for melee attacks. Each of these weapons can be used to combine abilities into attack combinations. In addition, the chip system offers the possibility of making further improvements to the character. Display changing chips add further information to the player interface , such as a life point display . So-called "plug-in chips" change skills depending on the style of play and improve either attack damage or defensive strength. The number of chips that can be used is limited by a character's storage system.

Various items of equipment can be purchased from vendors for resources and money collected in the area. These are used to enhance weapons or skills. The equipment also includes consumables such as energy batteries. Purchased bait can be used to briefly tame animals remaining on the planet and then ride them. In this state, groups of opponents can also be fought.

development

After Nier was released, both director Taro Yoko and producer Yosuke Saito wanted to create a sequel. Following positive fan reviews from the original Nier, both Square Enix and the team that worked on the original game were ready to continue the Nier game series. In addition, the team also wanted to create a better, more action-oriented gameplay experience. As a result, they contacted Platinum Games, which have a solid reputation for high quality action role-playing games such as Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengance . The game was originally intended to be developed for mobile platforms or the Playstation Vita , but it was decided early on to develop the game for the Playstation 4.

Production for the game began in 2014, including six months of pre-production. The production team consisted of many developers from the original Nier. Yoko wrote the script for the game. The team called the main theme of the game "agaku", a Japanese word which means to fight out of a bad situation. When writing the plot, Yoko hesitated about adding Devola and Popola to the script due to their roles in the original game, but eventually decided to include them as well. During production, the development team used both fan and critic feedback from Nier. Based on this feedback, they improved various aspects of the game, from character design to graphic design. Building on this, the team concentrated on the core aspects of action and music.

According to Negishi and programmer Ryo Onishi, developing a game in line with its predecessor was a major problem, which required a shift away from the style of their earlier titles. For the battle system, the team adopted the system from the first part of the kidney and combined it with elements from other titles from Platinum Games. The main concept of Taura was that the combat system should surpass the original and build it into the story. A special feature during development was the low concentration of enemy units in the game, as the nature of the game requires, according to Negishi. This was part of their effort to fulfill Yoko's creative vision: by incorporating fewer enemies, the team gave players the opportunity to "enjoy" the quiet beauty of the game's devastated world.

Compared to the original Nier, which came in two versions with a modified main character for western markets, the team for Nier: Automata showed the same main character in all versions, focusing on creating a high quality Japanese RPG rather than customizing theirs To make western edition. The concept art of enemy units was designed by Hisayoshi Kijima, while the environment was designed by Kazuma Koda, Yasuyuki Kaji and Shohei Kameoka: the environment design was worked out with Yoko. The design team wanted to create places that players would visit in the real world. Another challenge arose in designing the characters, which, despite their mechanical nature, should look as lively as possible.

Audio

Composer Keiichi Okabe, who had worked on both Nier and Drakengard 3 , was responsible for creating the music as a composer with his studio band Monaca alongside his colleague Keigo Hoashi. The tracks were influenced by classical music and contained elements from the previous Nier, which provided a certain degree of melancholy. The musical ambience was changed in such a way that the setting previously created by Nier in the first part of pastures and villages was changed to a sound setting with mechanical and more brutal themes. Another factor was the open world environment: instead of a single, winding track, Okabe created multiple hard and soft tracks that alternated depending on the situation and environment. As in the first part, Emi Evans was engaged for the vocals. Shotaro Seo also provided his male voice. Nicole and Nami Nakagawa joined Evans to contribute a three-part choir that is used in a boss fight, among other things.

The general sound design was developed by Masato Shindo, who was confronted with a new challenge: in their previous projects, sound echoes were created through individual settings created by the team, which would not work properly in an open world due to the size. Instead, Shindo created a realistic soundscape in which he designed a system to define echoes in real time, which determines how much reverberation needs to be created in the current environment.

A concert in Tokyo, called " NieR Music Concert & Talk Live ", was held on April 16, 2016 in the Ex Theater Roppongi with various pieces of music by Nier and Nier: Automata . An official soundtrack album has been announced for March 28, 2017.

Nier: Automata was first announced at the Square Enix press conference at E3 2015. At this point the game was only 10% complete. The official title, along with a gameplay trailer and the release date, was revealed at the "Paris Game Week 2015". It was initially scheduled to be released in November 2016, but Square Enix delayed it due to concerns about commercial success as other prominent titles were also due to be released around that time. It was decided that a Q4 or Q1 release of Nier: Automata had more chances of commercial success. The delay has given the developers extra time to improve the quality and gameplay balance. Nier: Automata was released on March 7, 2017 for Playstation 4 in Europe and North America. A release for PC via the Steam platform was later announced.

A limited Black Box Collector's Edition includes the game, a character of 2B, a special edition of Nier: Automata -Konzerts, an art book, a download code for a specific item and a special prequel - amendment . In addition to the standard version, there is a Day One edition in Europe and North America, which shows the artwork by Yoshida on the cover. The first playable demo version of Nier was released on December 22nd, 2016 : Automata for Playstation Plus members. The first mission that can be played in it is just one of the shorter missions, but it still communicates the style of the game and creates real anticipation for the full version with the exciting end. In contrast to its predecessor, the combat system is made fluid by Platinum Games, attacks cannot be blocked, but can be evaded with certain combinations, which makes strong counterattacks possible. In addition to the actual main character, the player is accompanied by a small android that can also be controlled, which means that you control two characters in parallel. Especially for new players the possibility to let the AI ​​do the fighting in the easiest game mode ("soft mode") is particularly important. The controls can be completely customized so that, for example, the companion android targets and attacks completely automatically. In addition, the camera setting takes getting used to. Basically, the camera can be adjusted according to your own preferences, but in some areas a setting is specified, which is more reminiscent of an old jump-'n'-run game than a modern role-playing game. The story told and the graphics of the demo version convinced and made me want to publish.

Reviews after publication

Nier: Automata received mostly positive to very positive reviews. The Metacritic website calculated a score of 88 out of a maximum of 100 possible points from a total of 65 reviews. The website Gamerankings , which also calculates an average value, determined a value of 89% from a total of 34 reviews. Both values ​​were determined for the Playstation 4 version.

Like its predecessor, the game stands out due to the complex and dark plot. The story can only be fully grasped and understood only when it is played through several times. The different endings allow the story to be relived from a different perspective, with the scenes already played opening up completely new storylines from a different perspective. Above all, new weapons, chips and other items can be found in further game sessions, which means that the gameplay elements can also be changed by playing through several times. The relationship between 2B, 9S and A2 is also rated positively. The dialogues in the game are important for the story, both in the synchronization and in the text to be read. The relationship, especially between 2B and 9S, is told in several emotional levels, ranging from loving conversations to military obedience.

Nier: Automata shines through the cooperation with Platinum Games in contrast to its predecessor Nier with a fluid and action-packed combat system. The choice of weapons in the two different sets offer additional variety. The controls are designed for beginners and experienced hack-and-slay players alike and offer many usable attack combinations. In addition, the possibility of counter-attacks after evading is positively emphasized, as it brings another aspect into the control. In addition, the graphic design plays all aspects of the gameplay actions cleanly, which enables deep immersion in the game environment. The small selection of computer-controlled opponents is negative. The various machine beings are striking and charming, but repeat themselves over time, which in turn has a negative effect on the depth of the game. Only the boss fights are always a challenge for the player.

The background music is particularly praised. The pieces support all aspects of the situations conveyed by the game. The soundtrack also creates an emotional experience that, together with the story told, conveys a well-rounded and coherent overall picture, which is in no way impaired by small graphic glitches or errors during gameplay.

Sales figures

Nier: Automata sold 198,542 times in the first week after its release in Japan. It thus reached number 1 in the weekly charts in Japan. It already surpasses the copies of the original Nier sold.
