Countdown in Manhattan (alternative title: The Rat - Countdown in Manhattan ; Original title: Night of the Juggler ) is an American action film from 1980 . Directed by Robert Butler and written by Rick Natkin and Bill Norton Sr. based on a novel by William P. McGivern .
action
Gus Soltic wants revenge on a real estate entrepreneur by kidnapping his daughter. However, the man mistakenly kidnaps fifteen-year-old Kathy Boyd, the daughter of Sean Boyd, who used to work as a police officer, who dresses similarly to the millionaire's daughter. The kidnapper makes demands anyway and threatens the girl's death.
Sean Boyd tries to save his daughter on his own. Policeman Otis Barnes tries to stop him and follows Boyd; he shoots the fleeing Boyd on the streets of New York, who escapes in a taxi. Meanwhile, police are awarding Soltic a $ 3 million ransom in cash to arrest him during the surrender. A suitcase with the money is prepared, which is to be handed over in a house.
Boyd learns that the kidnapper owns a dog and is given its address at an animal shelter. Maria, who is employed at the shelter and who accompanies him later, helps him with the search. On the way, Boyd gets into a fight with youthful gang members. Soltic, who works for the locally operating district heating company, escapes through the channels of the district heating system. He takes Kathy with him and reaches the house where the ransom was deposited. There he shoots a policeman. He takes the money and wants to spend the rest of his life with Kathy. Boyd follows Soltic, whom he shoots after a duel.
Reviews
Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times on June 6, 1980 that the film began at a “ brisk pace ” but would then be as “ breathless ” and overloaded with the plot as a thriller could be. He offers numerous New York locations and dozens of car crashes. James Brolin shows calm presence in the worst of situations and a representation that is strong enough that they can cope with more dialogues and fewer car chases. Maslin praised Richard S. Castellano and some " talented newcomers in smaller roles ", including the " likeable " Abby Bluestone and Julie Carmen.
The magazine TV direkt 22/2007 described the film as a " violent action-revenge fuss ".
backgrounds
The film was shot in New York City . Although the German translation suggests otherwise, it is not set mainly in Manhattan, but in the South Bronx , which at that time was largely destroyed and had a bad reputation beyond the USA.
