Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Jakowlew (geologist)

Nikolai Nikolaevich Yakovlev ( Russian Николай Николаевич Яковлев ; born April 15 . Jul / 27. April  1870 greg. In Kazan ; † 19th June 1966 in Komarowo ) was a Russian geologist , paleontologist and university teachers .

Life

Yakovlev attended secondary school in Kazan and studied at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute with graduation in 1893. He then became an employee of the Geolkom ( Geological Committee of the All-Russian Geological Institute).

In 1895 Jakowlew carried out the first geological investigations in the northern part of the Donbass . He examined the Druzhovsky-Konstantinovsky anticline of the Donbass in more detail . Along with Feodosy Nikolaevich Chernyshev he examined the fauna of the limestone at the Cape Greben on Waigatsch and the river Nechwatowa on Novaya Zemlya . With his dissertation on the fauna in some sediments of the Upper Paleozoic Era in Russia , he received his doctorate in geological-mineralogical sciences , whereupon he taught as a professor at the Mining Institute. Corresponding investigations in Donbass and on the central Volga at the confluence of the Samara followed. He described Mosasaurier , Crassatellidae the Paleozoic, Triassic - Dinosaurs on Spitsbergen , Rugosa and plesiosaurs at Lena . In 1914 he received the small Lomonossow Prize for his studies of the fauna in sediments of the Upper Paleozoic Era .

After the October Revolution , Yakovlev became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) in 1921 . 1923–1926 he was director of the Geological Committee Geolkom (after Anatoly Nikolajewitsch Ryabinin ). Ekaterina Vladimirovna Lermontova was his assistant there. His successor was Dmitri Ivanovich Muschketow (1926–1929). Yakovlev was the chairman of the Russian Paleontological Society. His main focus was the paleontology of invertebrates .

The genus Prognathodon was named after Yakovlev. The same applies to Mount Yakovlev in Antarctica.
