Nikolaos of Greece

Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark (born October 1, 1969 in Rome , Italy ) is the third child of the former King Constantine II of Greece and his wife Anne-Marie of Denmark , the youngest daughter of King Friedrich IX. of Denmark and his wife Ingrid of Sweden .

Nikolaos is not entitled to the throne in Denmark, however , because Friedrich IX. excluded the Greek children from the line of succession in order to avoid a collapse of the Greek and Danish crowns. The Greek monarchy was abolished in 1973 by the military junta under Georgios Papadopoulos . After the overthrow of the military dictatorship, the new democratic government under Konstantin Karamanlis held a referendum on this issue. In the vote on December 8, 1974 , with almost 70% no votes, a clear majority was against the monarchy. As a result, his father is the last king of the Hellenes .

Life

Nikolaos was born on October 1, 1969 in Rome, where his family had lived in self-chosen exile since December 1967. He has four siblings: an older sister named Alexia , an older brother named Paul , a younger sister named Theodora, and a younger brother named Philippos. The family moved to England in 1974.
