Noel Hyde
Noel Challis Hyde CBE ( November 20, 1910 - September 12, 1987 ) was a British Air Force officer in the Royal Air Force , who was in the rank of Air Commodore between 1960 and 1962 in command of RAF Staff College, Andover .
Life
Pilot training and World War II
Hyde began his flight training on September 28, 1929 at the flight training school No. 5 Flying Training School RAF and, after completing his training on September 9, 1930, was the pilot of No. 26 Squadron RAF . There he was promoted to Leutnant ( Pilot Officer ) on September 13, 1930 and to Oberleutnant ( Flying Officer ) on March 13, 1931 . On March 4, 1932, he switched to No. 208 Squadron RAF and received there on March 13, 1935 his promotion to captain ( Flight Lieutenant ). On November 14, 1935 he was first an officer in the staff of the Air Force Depot in the Middle East and then on September 15, 1936 an officer in the staff of the headquarters of the armed forces in Palestine and Transjordan ( British Forces in Palestine and Transjordan ).
On May 19, 1937 Hyde was a test pilot at the Airplane and Aircraft Weapons Research Institute A & AEE ( Airplane and Armament Experimental Establishment ) and was promoted to Major ( Squadron Leader ) in this use on August 1, 1938 . In November 1940 he took over his first command post, as a commanding officer of the stationed at the RAF Waddington military airfield No. 207 Squadron RAF . On the night of 7 April 8, 1941, he flew a bomber of the type Avro 679 Manchester to attack flight to Kiel as his by flak caught fire on the starboard side. He and his crew managed to jump with the parachute while his bomber crashed near Hamburg . Thereupon he got into German captivity , which he spent as the highest ranking officer of the RAF in the Warburg officers' camp ( Oflag VI B ) until the end of the Second World War .
Post-war period and promotion to Air Commodore
After the end of the war, Hyde found different uses and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel ( Wing Commander ) on October 1, 1946 and to Colonel ( Group Captain ) on July 1, 1948 . Furthermore, he was mentioned in the war report on January 30, 1947 for his services ( Mentioned in dispatches ) . On September 5, 1949 he became head of the intelligence group at the headquarters of the 2nd Tactical Air Fleet 2TAF ( RAF Second Tactical Air Force ). On December 12, 1950, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the US Legion of Merit . Subsequently, in December 1951, he became the commander of the RAF Binbrook Air Force Base , before he became head of the operations department of the RAF Second Tactical Air Force on September 21, 1953. In the meantime he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) on June 1, 1953 .
On July 1, 1954, Hyde was promoted to Air Commodore and took over on January 15, 1956 the post of Commanding ( Air Officer Commanding ) of the Central Flying School ( Central Flying School ). He held this post until May 30, 1958 and was then a representative of the Air Force in the Armed Forces Council ( Air Force Member Armed Forces Council ) of the Malaya Federation .
Most recently, Hyde was the successor to Air Commodore Eric Nelson on October 30, 1960 as the commander of the RAF Staff College at RAF Andover and remained in this position until he was replaced on September 24, 1962 by Group Captain Charles Willis . On November 20, 1962, he retired from active military service.
