Norbert Holzknecht (born April 13, 1976 in Grinzens ) is a former Austrian ski racer . His specialty disciplines were downhill and super-G . He achieved three top 10 placements in the World Cup and 17 victories in the European Cup .

biography

At the age of seven, Holzknecht attended a racing school with Hugo Nindl , and in 1986 and 1987 he became Tyrolean children's champion. After elementary school, he attended secondary school in Axams for two years before switching to main ski school in Neustift . In his age group Student II, Holzknecht was Austrian student champion in Super-G in 1991, and in 1995 he was Austrian youth champion in downhill in the age group Youth II. He started in FIS races and was accepted into the ÖSV squad in 1994, followed by his first appearances in the European Cup and participation in the Junior World Championship in 1995 in Voss , where he won the silver medal in the downhill.

On January 15, 1996 Holzknecht celebrated his first European Cup victory in the downhill from Les Orres , followed two weeks later by the second victory in the downhill from Veysonnaz . In the 1995/96 season he won the European Cup downhill classification for the first time. At the end of this winter he was used for the first time in the World Cup at the finals in Kvitfjell , where he finished 20th and last. After his European Cup discipline victory and the associated World Cup fixed starting place, Holzknecht initially only competed in World Cup descents in the winter of 1997/1998. But since a 17th place in the opening race in Val-d'Isère remained his best result and he then mostly only achieved places around 30th, he was relegated to the European Cup. In the 1997/98 season , Holzknecht again won the European Cup downhill classification with two victories in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and Megève , whereupon he came to further World Cup starts at the beginning of the 1998/1999 season. His best result of the season he achieved again in the opening race in Val-d'Isère as 15th, but then he remained without World Cup points, whereupon he had to start again in the European Cup.

After a weak 1999/2000 season, Holzknecht was able to qualify again for the World Cup via the European Cup in winter 2000/01 . He celebrated two victories in Les Orres and Sestriere and was tied for second in the European Cup downhill classification with Klaus Kröll from Styria , which secured him a fixed starting place in this discipline for the next World Cup winter 2001/2002. But again Holzknecht could not gain a foothold in the World Cup, a 20th place in the first downhill from Val Gardena was his best result of the season. He had to take a break for the whole of January due to an injury, after which he started again in the European Cup. In the winter of 2002/03 Holzknecht was the dominant European cup runner in the speed disciplines. He won six out of nine downhill runs and three out of six Super-G, with which he not only won both disciplines, but also the European Cup. In addition, he became Austrian downhill champion for the first time in 2003 .

With this, Holzknecht was able to return to the World Cup, where he achieved a total of three top 10 results in the next few years, but had to pause several times after injuries. Holzknecht achieved his first top 10 result in the World Cup on December 20, 2003 when he was ninth on the downhill run from Val Gardena. A month later, however , the 2003/04 season came to an end for him after he suffered a torn patellar tendon while driving in for the training run on the Kitzbüheler Streif . In the following 2004/05 season , Holzknecht once again finished eighth on the downhill from Val Gardena, once again among the top ten, but after a fall on the downhill from Chamonix on January 8th, during which he suffered a concussion , he came to the rest of the winter no further World Cup appearances. Once again on the Saslong in Val Gardena, Holzknecht achieved the best World Cup result of winter 2005/06 with tenth place in the downhill . Due to a new injury, the season came to an end for him shortly afterwards. The then 30-year-old had his last start in the World Cup on December 16, 2006 in the downhill run from Val Gardena, where he finished 30th. At the end of winter 2006/2007 Holzknecht ended his career with the start at the Austrian Championships in Innerkrems , where he won the downhill title a second time. He has been working as a trainer since the end of his active career.
