Hugo Nindl (born March 3, 1942 in Axams ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He won numerous international races in the 1960s and was four times Austrian champion . He also became professional world champion in 1971 and 1974.

Career

Nindl started skiing at an early age and already achieved some successes in school races. At the beginning of the 1960s he was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association . He contested his first international races in 1960 in Kitzbühel . In the winter of 1961/62 he achieved his first major successes. In Bad Ischl he was three-time Austrian junior champion and in Arosa he was on the podium for the first time in an international competition with two third places in the giant slalom of the three-piste races . In January 1963 Nindl achieved third place in the Lauberhorn run in Wengen and second place in the Hahnenkamm run in Kitzbühel. He celebrated his first victories in the subsequent Northern European races: in Norefjell and Narvik , he won the giant slalom and the combined, and in Gällivare he won the slalom, the giant slalom and the downhill. In the winter of 1963/64 Nindl only won the giant slalom in Innsbruck . Two weeks before the start of the 1964 Winter Olympics , which took place in his immediate home, he suffered an injury, which is why he could not participate in races again until March.

Next winter, the Tyrolean became the strongest slalom runner of the season with three wins in Davos (February 13), where he also came second in combination, Ortisei (February 21) and at the “Vail Cup” in Vail (March 16) . In addition, he was Austrian champion in giant slalom (March 5th) and combined (March 7th) in the Axamer Lizum . In the winter of 1965/66, however, Nindl remained without an international victory; the best results he achieved in the “three-piste race and Toni Mark commemorative race” were initially 3rd downhill in Saalbach on January 27th and the best result of the season was second place in the slalom in Zell am See on January 29th. In addition to the victory in the only national giant slalom in Gries am Brenner around the 14th Brenner Trophy »on January 2nd and the successful defense of the Austrian championship title in combination in Schwaz (also 3rd place in the downhill on February 25th and 2nd place in the slalom on February 27th) were still fifth in the Hahnenkamm slalom and 4th place in the combination on January 23rd and 3rd place in the slalom and the combination in Courchevel on 4th / 5th. March stronger results. He also came third in the slalom on March 25th at the “Fünfländerreffen” and “Werner Memorial Cup” in Sun Valley . At the World Championships in August 1966, he only started in slalom on August 14th, but with start no. 11 (as well as his comrades Huber, Schranz and Messner) in the first round of the disqualification. He was worried about his participation because of a shoulder injury he had suffered weeks earlier, which, however, still hampered him after the World Championships. At the end of December, Nindl reported to the management training course in Schladming . In the Ski World Cup, which was held for the first time , a twelfth place in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio was his best result, but it did not bring him any points (because these were only available for the first ten). However, he achieved one victory (slalom in Malmberget ) and several podiums in non-World Cup competitions and he was Austrian combined champion for the third time in a row.

On January 8th, 1968 Nindl celebrated another victory in the FIS slalom in Morzine . Two days later he had a bad fall during downhill training on the Lauberhorn. He broke his right shin, had to end the season and was unable to compete in any races the following winter. After he lost his membership in the ÖSV squad, he switched to the professional racing series in the USA in 1970 . There he still achieved great successes, especially the professional world championship titles in 1971 and 1974. In 1975 Nindl ended his active career. He returned to Austria and founded the Austria Racing Camps . A few years later he also took over the management of the ski school in Axams.
