Norbert "Noppa" Joos (born September 6, 1960 in Chur ; † July 10, 2016 on Piz Bernina ) was a Swiss mountaineer and mountain guide .

life and career

Norbert Joos started mountaineering at an early age and climbed the Matterhorn at the age of twelve . Shortly before his 20th birthday, he had already conquered the three great north faces of the Alps ( Eiger , Matterhorn and Grandes Jorasses ). At the age of 21 he completed his training as a mountain guide.

With the ascent of Denali (6190 m) in 1981, Joos turned to high-altitude mountaineering . He climbed a total of 13 of the 14 eight-thousanders on earth without using additional oxygen . All he needed to climb all eight-thousanders was Mount Everest (8,848 m), which he failed to climb for the last time in May 2008, the sixth attempt. Thereupon he moved away from his goal of climbing all eight-thousanders without additional oxygen. Joos said he would not try again. Everest has been beyond his capabilities since he suffered a stroke in 2006 when he descended from Kangchenjunga .

Since 1993 Joos has been running a mountain sports shop in Chur, where he says he spent around 60% of his working hours. He also continued to work as a mountain guide and gave lectures on high-altitude mountaineering.

In 2005 Joos and his partner Peter Gujan circled the canton of Graubünden on the 740 km long border line; In 77 days they climbed 335 peaks and conquered 145,000 meters in altitude.
