The 129  acres (0.5  km² ) large nature reserve Norris Reservation is located near Norwell in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

Protected area

Already in the first thirty years after the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in Plymouth , 20  mi (32.2  km ) south, shipbuilding was carried out on the North River . For the next two centuries the river, along with the settlements through which it flowed, formed an important center of New England's naval industry . By the end of the Civil War , more than a thousand boats had been built in the shipyards there .

Growing Weymouth pines and oaks , which can still be found in the reserve today, were used as building material . Some of the most famous ships built on the North River include the Beaver , which played a role in the Boston Tea Party , and the Columbia , which explored the Pacific Northwest and after which the Columbia River is named.

Many traces from this period can still be found in the protected area. The dam that dammed the Second Herring Brook into a lake is still preserved, in order to use the water power for nearby sawmills and grain mills . There is also the axis of a water wheel and a millstone . The stone walls built to delimit the properties are also still there.

The sanctuary was named after Albert and Eleanor Norris, who began buying up properties along the North River in the 1920s, which has since been registered as a National Natural Landmark and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Scenic River . They built a holiday home there and laid out a system of paths. In 1970, the family donated the first part to the trustees, further donations followed in 1982, 1992 and 2000.

There are 2 mi (3.2 km) of hiking trails available to visitors in the reserve.
