The University of North Dakota (also called UND ) is a state university in Grand Forks , in the east of the US state North Dakota . It is the oldest university in North Dakota and the largest with 14,900 students. This is where the state's only medical and law school is located.

history

The college was founded by the Dakota Territory Congregation in 1883 , six years before the state of North Dakota was established . The current president is Mark Kennedy .

In 2004 the university was able to acquire research funding worth 82.5 million. In May 2006, students at UND developed a suit for manned space travel to Mars .

Sports

Alreus Center

Until 2012 the sports teams were called the UND Fighting Sioux . In 2012, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) issued a decree prohibiting schools under its control from using racist or perceived racist logos and team names. The AND fought against this decree; UND supporters managed to initiate a state-wide vote. Approx. 67% of those who voted voted against the re-use of the team logo and name; this enabled NCAA sanctions against the school to be averted.

Word mark of the sports teams

Between 2012 and 2015, the UND sports teams did not have a team name; since 2015 they have been called the Fighting Hawks .

The university is currently part of the Big Sky Conference . The men's ice hockey team plays in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference ; the women's team plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association .
