The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité (formerly Saint-Georges ) in La Rochepot , a parish in the Côte-d'Or department in the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté , was probably founded in the mid-12th century built. The church, which was initially dedicated to St. George , originally belonged to a priory of the Benedictine abbey of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain . In 1909, the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

In the 15th century the church was badly damaged by fire. The vaults of the nave and presumably the crossing tower collapsed. At the end of the 15th century, the bell tower on the south side of the west facade was rebuilt. At the beginning of the 16th century the monks left the monastery and retired to the priory of Couches , which was also under the Benedictine abbey of Flavigny. The church of La Rochepot was first attached to the parish of Baubigny before becoming an independent parish church in 1654. At that time she received the patronage of Notre-Dame-de-Nativité (Virgin Mary's Birth).

architecture

Exterior construction

The portal on the west facade still has its original four columns decorated with leaf capitals . The unadorned tympanum and the tower pillars were renewed. The walled up portal on the north side of the nave was perhaps the entrance to the no longer existing cloister . The main apse and the two side apses, which are covered with limestone slabs, adjoin the clearly protruding transept in the east . In 1860 the sacristy was added to the south transept .

inner space

inner space

The three-aisled nave is divided into four bays and is covered by a wooden barrel . High pointed arcades open from the central nave to the narrow side aisles. They rest on square pillars with fluted pilasters and half-columns decorated with capitals . The transept arms still have their groin vaults , the semicircular apses are vaulted with domes . A broken triumphal arch leads to the main apse, in the wall of which five niches framed by arcades and three arched windows are cut.

Capitals

The capitals are carved with figural scenes and stylized leaves. They are made in the Burgundian Romanesque style of the mid-12th century and show the influence of the famous sculptures of the cathedral of Autun or the church of Saint-Andoche in Saulieu . One capital shows the proclamation of the birth of Jesus by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary , another one shows a warrior on horseback fighting an eagle. On another capital, Balaam sits on his donkey, in front of him stands the angel with the sword in his hand.

Furnishing

The church has two paintings from the chapel of La Rochepot Castle .
