The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-de-Kerdro in Locmariaquer , a municipality in the Morbihan department in the French region of Brittany , is based on a Romanesque church building from the 11th / 12th. Century back. The oldest parts of the church, the crossing and the choir , were added to the list of architectural monuments ( Base Mérimée ) in France in 1925 as Monument historique .

history

As early as the 9th century there was a parish in Locmariaquer , as can be seen from a document from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sauveur in Redon , which maintained a priory there. In 1082 the Abbey of Sainte-Croix in Quimperlé came into the possession of the priory and introduced the Marian patronage. The spelling of the name was Loc-Maria-Kaër (place dedicated to the beautiful Virgin Mary). The Benedictines of Sainte-Croix had a new church built, which was completed in 1120. The crossing and the choir have been preserved from this Romanesque church building. Changes took place in the 17th and 18th centuries. The nave and the transept arms were completely rebuilt in the 18th century. During this time, the two apses that originally joined the north side of the transept arms were demolished. In 1817 a bell tower was built on the crossing. In 1835 the portals on the north and west sides and the south porch were added. The modern lead glass windows were installed in 1960.

architecture

inner space

The church consists of a three-aisled nave , a transept and a semicircular closed choir, which is covered by a stone barrel vault. The crossing is bordered by high arched arcades , which rest on columns with Romanesque capitals .

Capitals

Of particular interest are the capitals, which are dated to the 11th century and which are all differently designed. Most of them have a vegetal decoration with stylized leaves and flowers, and rams' heads are depicted on a capital.

Furnishing

Altarpiece depicting the Annunciation
  • The altars of the south and north transepts were made in a workshop in Laval in the 17th century . Both altars are carved from stone and have the same structure. They are flanked by figures of angels, an altarpiece is inserted in the middle, and a top with a figure of a saint forms the top. The Annunciation is depicted on the altar painting in the north transept , above you can see a relief with the bust of Jesus holding a ribbon. The figure in the upper tower represents St. Isidore . The altarpiece in the south transept shows the Visitation, the relief shows the bust of God the Father , in the figure niche of the upper tower stands the Apostle Peter .
  • The colored carved figures of a Madonna and Child, the Apostle Peter and the Instruction of Mary date from the 18th century.
  • Another Madonna and Child, the so-called Notre-Dame de Kerdro , is a work from the first quarter of the 19th century.
  • The holy water font by the portal on the south side dates from the 15th century. It is made of granite and decorated with grape leaves and grapes.
  • The coat of arms of the Malestroit family is carved on a grave slab.
