Notre-Dame (Senonches)
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady in Senonches , a commune in the Eure-et-Loir in the French region of Center-Val de Loire , was on the site of a former abbey built, which existed prior to the 12th century. The church, dedicated to Notre-Dame (Our Lady), has numerous stained glass windows from the 19th century. In 1927, the bell tower was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a monument historique .
history
After the reconstruction of the castle of Senonches, the church was converted into a fortified church in the 12th century and included in the city's defenses. A tower was added to the church to serve as a watch and defense tower . The church, in which up to 1000 people could find refuge, was surrounded by moats. Until 1776 the church was under the control of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Père-en-Vallée in Chartres .

Exterior construction
During the construction of the building, natural stone and brick were used in decorative alternation, which gives the building a special appearance. With its square bell tower with its massive buttresses, which are doubled at the corners, the church gives a defensive impression. Of the clock tower an octagonal stair tower is mounted, the 32 embrasures comprising. Inside, a spiral staircase with 122 steps leads up. The bell tower is pierced on all floors by arched windows, which date back to the Romanesque period and which are designed differently on all floors. Double sound arcades have been cut into the top floor .
inner space
The interior consists of a wide nave that opens into a choir in the east and to which a double aisle is attached in the north. The original wood paneling of the ceiling was replaced after 1853 by a vault made of brick and plaster.
Leaded glass window
Saints and martyrs such as Quiricus and Julitta , Saint Barbara of Nicomedia , Saint Stephen and Saint Benedict of Nursia and his sister, Saint Scholastica , are depicted on the leaded glass windows from the 19th century . Further topics are the instruction of Mary, the baptism of Jesus , the Holy Family , the apparition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Margareta Maria Alacoque and St. Dominic receives the rosary from Mary . Two windows bear the signature of the Haussaire workshop : HAUSSAIRE REIMS 1880 . On one window the apparition of the Virgin Mary of Bernadette Soubirous is depicted, on the other an angel over the church of Senonches.
