Nova Lima , officially Portuguese Município de Nova Lima , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais . It is part of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte and is about 20 kilometers from Belo Horizonte . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 94,889 inhabitants, who are called Nova-Limenser ( nova-limenses ).

history

Historically, the municipality was known as Campos de Congonhas, Congonhas de Sabará, Villa Nova de Lima and, after receiving city rights from 1891 to 1923, as Vila Nova Lima. The toponym is named after a former local named Augusto de Lima.

economy

Mining is one of the city's main economic activities, including the extraction of iron ore and gold . The city's most famous mine is Morro Velho (Old Hill), a gold mine with a depth of 2700 meters.

Sports

In the city is the Villa Nova AC , the second oldest still active football club in Minas Gerais. The club was a major force from the 1930s to the early 1950s, winning five Minas Gerais state championships during that time.
