Nova Palmeira , officially Portuguese Município de Nova Palmeira , is a small town in the Brazilian state Paraíba of the Região Nordeste . It is around 250 km from the capital, João Pessoa . According to an estimate by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019, the population was 4906 people, who are called Palmeirenses ( port.palmeirenses or nova-palmeirenses ).
history
The area was taken over as early as 1818 and a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Guia was built. Around 1880 the core of today's city was built with the Fazenda Jerimum . From December 20, 1961, the territory became a district of the Pedra Lavrada municipality ( Distrito de Nova Palmeira ) and was spun off on November 14, 1963 and made an independent municipality.
Since 2017, it has formed the geostatistical Região geográfica imediata Cuité-Nova Floresta with nine other locations .

Nova Palmeira is located in the Seridó Oriental Paraibano region , which is threatened by desertification , the climate is known as the steppe climate and is BSh according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 23.5 ° C. The average rainfall is 419 mm per year. In summer there is much less rainfall in Nova Palmeira than in winter.

The dry climate has an impact on employment and the economy. In the dry season, the natural resources (ores, precious and semi-precious stones) in the area are increasingly mined. Gemstones can also be found in the coat of arms of the city, where cotton used to be grown.
