Nowy Świat (translated New World , formerly also called Smoleńsko ) is a district of the city of Krakow in Poland and has been part of Dzielnica I Stare Miasto ( German district 1 old town ) since 1990 . Nowy Świat was the third district from 1859 to 1951. When the small-scale urban structure was dissolved in 1973, it came to the Śródmieście (inner city) district until 1990 .

location

Nowy Świat borders the "Planty" in the east. These denote parks that were created in the area of the abandoned city fortifications. In the northeast lies the oldest part of Krakow, in the east Okół , both of which form the old town of Krakow . The Nowy Świat district borders the Vistula in the south-west and the Wawel Castle in the south-east , which has been known as “II. Zamek " (castle) or" II. Wawel ”represented a separate municipality. In the north lies the former fourth district of Piasek (originally Garbary ).

history

Nowy Świat (bottom center) in front of the city walls in the middle of the 17th century

In 1542 the Smoleńsk Manor in Ferali ( Zwierzyniec ) was mentioned under the Kraków Castle owned by the Myszkowski family. In addition, some buildings were built that developed into the Jurydyka of the same name . Later, Smoleńsk Wielkorządowy and Smoleńsk Duchowny ( Bożego Miłosierdzia ) were distinguished.

In 1792 they were incorporated into Kraków and from 1800 onwards, Garbary or Piasek and Czarna Wieś became Dzielnica III. At that time the name Nowy Świat replaced the Old Slavic name Smoleńsk. However, Smoleńsk Street got its name in 1881.

The municipality had on December 31, 1880 and at the 1900 census population of 2323 and 5210 people respectively.

The area has been part of the buffer zone of the adjoining UNESCO World Heritage Site " Historical Center of Krakow " since 1978 and was included in the voivodeship's national list of monuments on June 9, 2015 as the urban ensemble "Układ urbanistyczny oraz zespół zabudowy dawnej III dzielnicy katastralnej miasta Krakowa - Nowy Świat" Lesser Poland registered.

Architectural monuments (selection)

The district is part of an area that was declared a historical city complex (historyczny zespół miasta) on September 16, 1994 by presidential decree of Lech Wałęsa as a historical monument (Pomnik historii) .
