Zwierzyniec (Krakow)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zwierzyniec is a district of Krakow in the fork of the river Rudawa in the north and the Vistula in the south, west of Kraków's Old Town in Poland . He is eponymous for the city district VII Zwierzyniec .

history

A settlement already existed in the territory of the Wislanes in the 9th century. Construction of the Salvator Church began in the late 11th century . In the second half of the 12th century the Norbertan nunnery was founded by the knight Jaksa Gryfita after his return from the crusade to the Holy Land. As the village Sverincia or Zwerincia it was first mentioned in 1224, as Zwierzyniec only in 1422. Until 1910 it belonged to the Norbertaner women. The name means zoo in German, although it has not been confirmed in the sources that the area was used for hunting - the king preferred to hunt in the Niepołomice Forest , although the Wolski Forest was closer to town, west of Zwierzyniec. In 1327 the village of Media Villa or Halbindorf , later Polish Półwsie Zwierzynieckie , was founded by Norbertans on the site of Zwierzyniec, on the left bank of the Rudawa, under German law . The Smolensk Manor in Ferali (Zwierzyniec), mentioned in 1542, developed into the Jurydyka Smoleńsk (o) , now Nowy Świat (New World).

When Poland was partitioned for the third time in 1795, it became part of the Habsburg Empire . In the years 1815–1846 the village belonged to the Republic of Kraków , in 1846 it was annexed to the Austrian Empire as part of the short-lived Grand Duchy of Kraków . From 1855 it was part of the Kraków District .

In 1900 the community of Zwierzyniec had 356 hectares, 213 houses with 2976 inhabitants, the majority of them Polish-speaking (2543) and Roman Catholic (2870), also (mostly in the military) 256 German-speaking, 40 Jews.

Between 1903 and 1912 the old Rudawa river bed was filled in. Around 1908 the Salwator villa development was built between Półwsie and Zwierzyniec , mostly inhabited by local officials.

On April 1, 1910, the community was incorporated into Krakow. In 1921 the Zwierzyniec (XIII) district had 282 buildings with 3325 residents.
