Geographical location

Location of Nucet in Bihor County

Nucet is located in the historical Kreisch area in the depression of the same name between the Codru-Moma Mountains (Munții Codru-Moma) in the west and the Bihor Mountains in the east. With the two districts Băița (Hungarian Rézbánya ) and Băița-Plai and the resort of Vârtop ( Lage ) on the border with the Alba district, the small town has a total area of 41.11 km², which corresponds to 0.54% of the Bihor district. On the river Crișul Băiței - a source river of the Crișul Negru (Black Screech) - and on Drum național 75 , the small town is located 12 kilometers southeast of Ștei , about 30 kilometers from Beiuş and about 90 kilometers from the district capital Oradea .

Due to its geographical location, the region benefits from a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons: a warm summer, an autumn with falling temperatures, a cold winter and a spring with gradually rising temperatures. Precipitation is abundant and extreme temperatures are around -25 ° C to +36 ° C.

history

Băița (Resz Banija) when Nucet did not yet exist, in the Josephinian land survey from 1782 to 1785.

The village emerged as a settlement for miners only after the Second World War, after uranium mining areas were opened up in the nearby Bihor Mountains. The city of Nucet therefore has a very young history. The first official documentary certificate is dated February 2, 1956.

In addition, the history of Băița is much older. Natural resources have been mined in the area since 1270.

After the uranium mining stopped, the population decreased again significantly.

There are numerous walnut trees in Nucet , from which the name of the place was probably derived.

population

According to the 2011 census, the population of Nucet is 2,148. Most of the residents are  Romanians  (88.5%). Important minorities are  Roma  (3.7%) and  Hungarians  (3.42%). Ethnicity is unknown for 3.93% of the population.

From a denominational point of view, most of the residents are  Orthodox (81.39%). There are also Pentecostals (5.22%), Greek Catholics (2.96%), Catholics (2.26%) and Reformed (1.11%). Denominational membership is unknown to 6.1% of the population of Nucet.

The opening of the mining operation in 1956 caused a demographic explosion. In a few years the population of the city grew from 631 inhabitants (1948) to 9,879 inhabitants (1956). In the 1960s, about 5600 people lived in Nucet. The cessation of uranium mining later led to a reduction in the population, which in 2012 reached 2,399.
