OVH SAS , based in Roubaix ( France ), is a French telecommunications and Internet service provider . With more than 260,000 servers in twenty data centers, the company is the European market leader in the hosting sector, and according to its own information it is in third place worldwide.

history

OVH was founded in 1999 by Octave Klaba while he was still a student, then in his third year at the Catholic Institute for Arts and Crafts (ICAM) in Lille . The start-up capital was 50,000 francs (equivalent to 7,622.45 euros).

In 2001 the company rented seven rack units ( height units ) from the Paris provider Claranet . However, there was a lack of space and cooling was also a problem. Therefore, the company then moved to a data center previously abandoned by the company Free in the 11th arrondissement (Paris) . Little by little the park grew until a number of 1200 machines was reached.

Additional servers have been added to meet demand. At the end of 2002, the company rented another data center next to Free in Courbevoie . Thereupon the opportunity arose to acquire a 3000 m² building unit in the 19th arrondissement (Paris) . OVH has been building its own servers since 2002 and is currently the third largest manufacturer.

In 2006 the company opened its first foreign subsidiaries. After Poland, where the Klaba family comes from, two subsidiaries followed in Senegal and Spain in the same year . During this time, the number of servers rose sharply from 6,000 to 12,000 servers, which is why the acquisition of a plot of land at the company's headquarters in Roubaix was used to build the new data center Roubaix 1 (RBX-1). In 2008 Roubaix 2 (RBX-2) and in 2009 Roubaix 3 (RBX-3) went into operation. With Roubaix 4 (RBX-4), the host put a data center into operation in 2011, which for the first time no longer required air conditioning. In 2012, OVH built its first containerized data center in Strasbourg to meet the needs of its Eastern European customers ( round-trip delay, or ping delay, which should be as short as possible , especially for online games ( game server )).

At the same time, further foreign branches were founded: Tunisia, Morocco, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Finland, Portugal, the Netherlands. The company currently has 15 subsidiaries in Europe and two in North Africa. In 2012 OVH Inc. was founded in the USA and Canada .

In 2015, Octave Klaba was replaced as CEO by Laurent Allard. Octave Klaba has been OVH's CTO and CEO and is responsible for the technical infrastructure.

For the company's 20th anniversary, the company announced that it would operate under the name OVHcloud with immediate effect.

Controversy

Spam and network abuse

In July 2014, the Spamhaus project listed the provider in first place among the “Top 10” of the “worst ISPs worldwide”. In 2016, the project listed the provider in first place for the number of botnet servers operated. The allegations include continued services for spammers , but also for hackers and botnet operators.

Web hosting for militia

Until September 2009, also hosted OVH site for the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda ( "Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda," FDLR), one in the Rwandan genocide involved militia of Hutu . The militia are charged with crimes against humanity and genocide against the Tutsi group . After this was discussed in the press in 2009, namely in the TAZ , OVH parted with the customer. OVH did not answer a request from the United Nations in 2008. It also remained unclear how the service was paid for, as the UN sanctions against the FDLR had frozen their funds worldwide.

Web hosting for WikiLeaks

In December 2010, Gizmodo announced that WikiLeaks has selected OVH as its new hosting provider. This came after Amazon's refusal to provide hosting services for WikiLeaks. Due to the intense public discussion that resulted from this, the French Minister of Industry Eric Besson felt compelled on December 3rd to have OVH investigate a ban on hosting Wikileaks. On December 6, 2010, a French court ruled that there was no legal obligation on the part of the OVH to refrain from hosting the WikiLeaks website.
